Default 9 1/4 diff strength?

There are varying opinions on the strength of the 9 1/4 " differential.

Any testimonials?

I've already heard yours Dirty Dan but feel free to contributeLOL

There was an article titled "A poor mans 9-3/4" in one of the Mopar publications describing how to eliminate problems by using some 8-3/4 pieces, axles etc. Ranked it pretty high, and rather simple to do.

The 9 1/4 is very very tough, all though not a popular as the 8 3/4 its is just as strong, my guess is stronger. The 4 wheel drive guys can tell ya on that. They never bust, my bro has a 85 4x4 1/2 ton with 38 inch Thornbirds with a mild 440 engine, used and abused, I have helped him work many hours on the differential, he has busted many fron rear (Dana Spicer 44's) spider gears and outer wheel axles, but has never even had the inspection cover off in the back, it has the borgwarner suregrip now owned by Auburn. Belive me there tough enough for drag race use, if they can survive in his truck!

I want to say the axles were the main thing, seems the 8-3/4's are thicker (stronger) and the "green brgs" were necessary also. I've slept since reading the article and that edits my tapes. This came up on a similar post a while back and someone chimed in that he had the article and was well versed on it. I will look through my stash and see if I can find it.

Dave, haven't found the article but the snooping has rang a bell. The main problem is the c-clip method of axle retention which is frowned upon by most sanctioning bodies. The 8-3/4 axles will fit (length?) using the "green" brgs. There are more little tricks involved but the memory bucket seems to be dry.

Provided the axle tubes are the same size as the 8 3/4(pretty sure it is), you will need to get 8 3/4 ends to retain those axles in it which should take care of the c-clips.
My question is:
Are the splines the same between the 8 3/4 and the 9 1/4.
I have read somewhere that some 9 3/4(Danas) are the same spline as the 8 3/4, but would like clarification please.
