transmission band adjustment tricks
my 904 kickdown band is out of adjustment, it needs 70 inch lbs of torque, but I don't have a inch/lbs wrench and don't want to spend 60 bucks on a one time use tool. Is there a trick I can do with a ft lbs wrench to convert it to inch/lbs
I've also heard the tighten to "x' and back off "z" turns factory method isn't the most optimal shifting set up. I've heard about loosening the bands and turning the driveshalft with your hands, and then slowly tightening the band untill you can barely move the driveshalft by hand. does this work. Thanks again for your help Jeff |

I have never done this(I have an inch-pds T-wrench) but I have heard of some doing it this way.............get a small open end wrench and cut it down to a total of 3" length. THEN tighten the band down JUST using snug thumb pressure on the end of that wrench. Then back it off.

There are at least a dozen variables that will affect the accuracy of the "tighten the bands and turn the driveshaft" method, don't do it.
Band adjustment isn't rocket science, like MF said, just use a short wrench to tighten the adjuster and you'll be close enough to the recommended 72 in. lbs. |
