Confused power steering

I have a stock power steering unit for my 71 318. It is a daily driver so I can't do without. The power steering can't keep up with hard acceleration so I wanted a larger pulley for it. Anyone ever mess with this? It drives me crazy when you hit the gas and it squeals like a hog in heat. I have eliminated every other option of what the problem could be and even tried every shaddy trick I knew and it still happens under hard acceleration from stand still. All comments and advice welcom, thanks.

How about a pulley kit?

I don't mean a ps pully, but the smaller crank pully of the kit, will reduce speed, somewhat.

I switched mine over to the March system. Works great with the serpentine...

Man those 71 318's must put out way more power than the 72's because i can hammer on the gas all day and I get nary a sqeak! I also run a stock style PS setup on my Super Bee and it never has made any noise and I know that hing has plenty or punch. Are you sure your belt is tight? Is it possible that the pulley bearings are letting go and putting up too much resistance?

March makes a serpentine system, but it is not exactly cheap.

Default squeal

seems like you had a belt become glazed or the pulley or the tension is not correct, check those before spending money on pulleys.

I was really lucky and got mine as a gift from DusterBob in SoCal. Normally, I believe March system runs about $229. I have seen others who have sanded (like a 220 grit) the groove in the pulley to try and get better grip from the belt. Usually the bar soap bit works, but sometimes....

Oh yes 71383bee it rips, not super fast (2:71 gears) but unusually responsive. It will burn the tires off if I nailed it hard. Tweak tweak. Hey Bee how do your belts go, my PS belt goes around the water pump also and I think that is part of the problem. I adjusted tension, soaped it, sanded it, changed the fluid, changed the belt, changed the type of belt, same problem. Only if I am turning hard right can I nail it good, but straight or going left its squeel city!!!

71sat,

My belt goes from the crank to the power steering. I have my 71 manual here at work today. i'll check it out to see how the routing goes. That could be an issue. Is yours an AC car?

I am actually very impressed with the performance of this little 318. It is very responsive to throttle pressure with no boging on anything. It picks up pretty nice for a 31 year old car with 109k miles! So far i have gotten it up to 15.6 mpg. I know there is more to be had.

I have noticed one thing at night...with the lights on the car gets an erratic idle. You can feel it in the seat of your pants the car sort of want to die. I am guessing it is an electric issue and this problem has arrisen since I installed the electronic ignition. I am guessing it is either the Voltage regulator or the alternator. Any thoughts or ideas guys?

Sounds like a glazed belt. Replace it with a GoodYear gator belt or a GoodYear V-grip. That should cure your problem.

Hey 71383BEE my car is an AC car but I currently by-passed the compressor with a smaller belt. Who needs AC when I have 4 windows! I would realy like to see what the belt rout is. I changed mine a few months ago and can't remember which way it used to go or even which pully is original for the water pump! Old age I guess. I am thinking that if I go straight to the steering that will cure the problem. A far as running at night you might want to get a higher amp alternator. Mine is the same way when I drive to work if I have the heat, radio, lights on and hit the turn signal at a stop she starts to studder and you can watch the amps drop way down. I think in 71 the alternators are like a 40 amp but I never looked. Keep your idle about 800 and it will be a temorary cure for the problem, mabye go in and clean up connections and the alternator brushes. Thanks
