I started to put the rings on my new pistons..The rings have a chamferred edge on the inside edge and a dimple on the oposite side. Which way is up?

Welcome, anytime. Hope it all goes smooth and quick for ya. Nothing sweeter than hearing a new engine touched off and knowing you did it all by yourself. A good feeling that is. Have fun.

Default H/P guesstimate?

Maybe you could help me figure approximate H/P for my combo?

1987-360 engine,Standard Bore with speed pro flat top pistons.
302 closed chamber heads. 1.5 rockers (stock).
Crane double roller timing set @ 5 degrees advance.
Cast iron 4 barrel intake w/ edelbrock 750 Carb.
2 1/8" dual exhaust.
Cam is as follows,441 intake/441 exhaust.
intake-276 deg. 218 dur
exhaust-286 deg. 228 dur

This engine was extremely low mileage when I got it. The bearings looked new, The crankshaft was perfect with no machining it measured within range for standard bearings. You could still see the cross hatch in the cylinders and there was no ridge at all. I REALLY got lucky.

Just guessing, but I'd say 250 275 range. I'd dump the ede for a thermoquad and a Weiand action plus intake. Best set up for a small block street car. 189 for the tq new at Advance auto and about the same price on the intake from Summit Racing. I'd also install an X or H pipe in the exhaust too. It's worth lot in low end torque and will pick up an additional 3 to 7 horse too. Sounds like a good set up though.
If you can find them get a set of X or J heads with 2.02 intake valves so it can breath a little better and mill them to .030 to get the cr back up.Also use a windage tray in the bottm before you put the oil pan back on it too.

Default Windage

WOW ! 250 to 275 sounds awful low for a 9.4 to1 compression engine. I was hoping for close to 350 HP.

What do you know about the Windage trays that sandwich betwwen the pan and block? They are cheaper .
I can't afford a new intake and carb. But, I can get a cossover pipe welded in for free.
I have an 800 cfm thermo Quad (needs rebuild) . I am going to look into the how to's for that when I get time..Still lot's to do on my engine first though.

Remeber the 318 was only 210 at 9 to 1 in '68. I'd guess closer to the 275. Dont like the 302 heads and little valves.

The windage trays that go between the oil pan and block rails are for big block cars. You need the other one that bolts to the four main bolts. The tq rebuild is real easy. Once the top comes off you set the floats and put a new squirter tube on it. Plus a pump and plunger cover. Bolt it all back up and that's pretty much it. Real simple carb to work on.

Default 302 heads

My mistake..The heads I have 714 stamped on them. Are the stock open chamber 360 heads a better choice? I have both sets.
I looked at the 360 valves and compared them to my new heads and they are the same size.

I bet they are 1.88 valves too. You can use them. Just take them to a shop and have 2.02 valves installed and some bowl work will help them out a little too. Mill them to about 64cc roughly .035" should do it, but make sure they cc them and then mill them.

Already had 'em done stock. I will see how they work before I tell my Wife I need another valve job on the same engine that hasn't been started yet!!!

I am looking for a windage tray now.

Thank you for your help and interest...Dave

Anytime. By the way Summit sells the Mopar windage tray or you can get it from the dealer too.
