Naaah ....pull it off. It was just put on there for Grandma and her 5th Ave. NO - that never came on a 440 - it was first used in the early 80's? ......... on those "luxury" cars.

Not to correct anyone, but they came on the bigblocks too. Later years in the big cars.

I recently picked up two B 727's from a local yard, both had the big ass weights bolted to the tailshafts. One came out of a 76? newport with a 400, the other a 78? newyorker with a 440.

I take them off when installing them.(I'm not kidding)

my 84 D250 had one of those on it... when it had the 360 in it... but it doesnt anymore. this also shows that the big cars arent the only place where this weight was used...

The first use of the harmonic damper weight was on the '73 Imperial.
Its purpose is to dampen the harmonics that occur with certain drivetrain combos. Other than the dead weight, there's no advantage to removing it.

Amazingly, a friend of mine has them also in his '73 Coronet. One in the tranny talshaft, and a bigger and even heavier one in the trans tunnel above the driveshaft. Don't wether it is so equipped because it's an export car?

A 904 can be built to withstand a 408 without a prob. It can $$$. I know a few people who chose to go with the 904 because of the weight diff between a 904 and 727.

The 904 will also be a little quicker in the 1\4. It will take alot of $$ be it a 904 or 727, it will just depend on what kind of mood im in at the time. Broke me elbow today on lunch and work isnt too happy. Maybe this project will have to wait longer..

If your going to invest start with the best

Yes it is true that the 904 can be biult to withstand some forms of abuse.
But only for a price.
The 727 in stock trim is a pretty stout trans.
The 904 in stock trim couldn't hold a candle to the 727.
Why do you supose mother mopar (never) offered a 904
behind a big block?
The 727 would be my choice if I had a small block or a /6.
If your going to invest start with the best
