Question Engine question 500ci - 505hp

A friend of mine is redoing a 68 GTX and asked me a question about the 500ci 505 HP crate engine from Chrysler. I didn't know but told him I'd go ask where people know all there is to know about Mopars.

He wants to cruise the car, drive it on the highway to shows, etc. and wants to know how this 500 ci engine would be. Can he use it on the road with a 3:55 gear? Can it be driven around the city or is this an engine that would "misbehave" on the street and just likes to run at the track?

Thanks for any help you can give. I always get good info here from all you guys.

That is a streetable engine. Due to poor quality of the crates, he should disassemble the engine and verify all tolerances and then reassemble using the proper torque specs.

So that's the reasoning... LOL

With the horror stories, it's just best to open it up and go through it with a fine tooth comb. Not opening it up is like playing Russian Roulette...

With my luck, if I just dropped it in, it would grenade, like so many others. Of course on the other side of that, if I were to open it up first, I would find that they did everything right...

big blocks are great for being great street/stip engines simply cuz of the displacement. he can run a mild cam, and have a very well mannered engine, and still run very fast.

i'd say go for it, and i'm with ed. from the horror stories, better safe than sorry. if it were me buying a crate, i'd tear it apart and just double check. plus, you get the 'braggin rights' of saying "i built that!!" heh...
