I guess what I'm after is a mileage comparison between the 4.7 and the 5.2, with the same axle ratios and tire height in similar vehicles. Also, whether the different torque curves make the 4.7 less desireable as a powerplant for towing.

I'm considering trading my Ford F450 Super Duty dually, with a 460 and 4.63 gears for a late model or new Dakota 4X4 (with a 4.7 and 3.92 gears), for towing a 2 horse trailer. I know the Dak won't do the job as easily, but I'm trying to figure out how not good it will be.

Thank you for any help.

This was discussed a while back on another Dakota forum, and it was determined that there is really no discernible difference in gas mileage between the 5.2 and the 4.7.
I can also tell you that there isn't MUCH difference between my 95 dakota ext. cab (with 5.2, 3.55 axle, OD tranny that in OD makes the ratio about 2.4), and my 79 Volare wagon (with 318, 4BBL thermoquad, no overdrive, with 2.4 rear axle). I get 16MPG around town and 20-21MPG on the road with the Dakota and about 1 less MPG with the wagon in town. I have never taken a long trip with the wagon, but expect it will equal or better the dakota as it is a bit less subject to wind resistance.

I think the Dakota is too light to be pulling a double horse trailer. I have pulled a 21' Inboard/outboard boat with mine, and it is fine for short distances, but I don't think it is suitable for longer trips. The weight of the truck needs to be factored in, as compared to the weight of the loaded trailer. Just my opinion, though.
