tranny upgrade
Hey Moparland, I was wondering is it possible to upgrade a 71 727, in a B body backed up by a small block, with an overdrive. If its possible where would I get the parts or would I need a whole new tranny? My car is a total street no track car unless I go to watch! It has a soon to be warm 318 but not a far cry from stock. What would this mod require? I would like to be able to roll at 75 mph at around 2000 rpm range. Thanks!

There are several alternatives. One is a GearVendors over/underdrive, which would mount to the back of your existing trans - RV dealer shops can help you get info, or go through the magazines looking for ads. Another is a late model od trans swap - but since these are electronically controlled, it might be kinda complex. I think the GearVendors addition is about $3,000 plus labor, and the late model swap costs would depend on your electronic/computer/mechanical skills.
I'm sure some of the other guys here would know more detail than I. Good luck from... Doug |

Any stock type upgrades, like mabye a different year tranny that might bolt up? Mabye like just a additional gear box at the output shaft? I didn't pay 3K for the whole car but it is an all numbers matching 71 Sat with only 78K miles. But I like it. I plan on a lot of up comming high speed highway miles and this engine is completly stock and does take very well to real high rpms. With some engine mods and an OD this things would blow past about anything!

The GV od attaches to the back of the trans, at the output shaft. I think you won't find what you want. Sorry.

I think it depends on what you want to spend. The 727 won't give you that much or an advantage. The GV OD seems to be the best fit with the least amount of modification, but it is expensive. I think you are limited to high gear selection and the 904 which really is not a bad combo for long distance freeway hauls. I drive 70mph for 116 miles each day on my sat and it gets pretty decent mileage and it has plenty or room to accelerate when I am at cruising speed.
