rolleyes chosing the right CAM?

I beffing up my 74 318 and wanted to know what the best cam would be for it. I was going to go with the mopar purple shaft but can't decide which one to get. I want it to be a good street car and see some strip. I was thinking of two differant cams: 221/228 at .050 .430/.450 lift or 228/231 at .050 .450/.455 lift.can some one help me decide? the compression will be around 10-1. I have the edelbrock heads and hookers headers. The intake is a edelbrock manifold and a demon carb 625 cfm. It has a a-727with a 8.25 rear end no sure grip. Not sure about the weight but the car is a 1974 plymouth satellite.

Go for a 270/270 @ .050 w/ 720 lift solid roller.

You need to list the specs of your engine and car. A factory spec 74 318 will have very low compression.

Compression?
Heads?
Headers?
Intake?
auto or 4-spd?
rear gears?
sure-grip?
tire size?
vehicle weight?

This is a topic that repeatedly comes up. You will find that you will get many recommendations.

I have found that the best solution is call Racer Brown(see ultimate phone book) and give them your specs. They will pic a cam that is right for you, based on your specs. Not just your engine, but your vehicle too.

The Racer Brown cams are ground to take advantage of the larger lifter bore of the chrysler engine. This is a claim that hughs makes as well.

I run a racer brown in mine. When I read the specs, I thought I was going to be in trouble, as they seemed milder than the cam I was taking out.

In reality the engine pulls harder down low, and breathes better up high.

Thats my 2 cents, you'll get about $1 worth of opinions on this thread.

Better off listing the Advertise duration of the purple cams rather than the .050 rating.

Thumbs up

Check out Racer Brown Cams in the ultimate phone book; Give them a call talk with Jim Dowel. He's good people and will try and help you out.
Get the cam that you want for what you are trying to do
