Factory 440 piston weight?
Does anyone know of the factory Hi po 440 hp pistons weigh in grams?

What year? There are a half dozen different 440 HP pistons.

Actually, Im not sure, they come .080 from the top and have NO valve reliefs.

The engine book shows 857.5 gr for the std 440 and 864 gr for the six-pak which has 4 valve notches. The book mentions the different compression heights through the years but doesn't mention any weight variations. The aftermarket piston makers advertise "stock replacement" but each company seems to have a different idea for the "stock" weight. Might be due to a different weight of their pin vs. a stock pin, Mopar pins are heavy. Have a scale and quite a few pistons so if you can't find any info I can weigh a selection and post it for you.

.080" in the hole is the '70-'71 piston (or the '67) and should come in close to 858 grams.

If they were any heavier they'd break the crank trying to lift them to the top.

Makes one think the rod bolts are stressed a tad when it stops at the top and starts back down. One of the premier engine people was quoted as saying "the complete piston and rod assy we use now (Nascar) is lighter than the piston from the Hemi that ran in the 60's". Maybe those 1/2" rod bolts were not overkill?

I run my 4 1/4 stroke 511 B-1 to 7600 on every pass with no problems. You can't get away with that with a 440 with stock rods because the weight of that cannonball will cause the rod to pinch in at the parting line and spin the bearing. My 511 pistons weigh 650 grams WITH the pins. I use Eagle BB Chev. 6.535" rods and I love 'em. That 860 gram weight that people are quoting is WITHOUT the pin. Typically, those 440 pistons are over 1050 grams race ready.

The reason I asked is that the pistons Im looking at are much lighter than these. Looks like a balanced job maybe in order. They only weigh 730 grams, pretty much like a TRW but a little lighter and use race type 1/16th rings and stuff, there priced much like TRW/Speed pro's just over $300 for .030 440 pistons.

Sounds good. Lighter is always better. If you are bucks down, just have the crank balanced to the new piston and your rods. It will be close enough.

Where are you getting 440 pistons for $300? Not to hijack your thread, but I am having an impossible time finding a set of plain jane 10:1 forged pistons! I'm starting another topic to not steal yours. |
