Performance mods? I am assuming you have a 383 like mine? Here is a hint: Keep your engine making low rpm torque to move that heavy thing. A good intake and some headers would be a nice start, and a nice hot ignition would be a great improvement over the points. From there, all of the normal big block tricks apply. Just don't expect to go extremely fast, because these cars we have are VERY heavy. Good luck

Here's my .02

With gearing no lower than 3.23, stock torque convertor, 28-30" tires and the need for sharp careful tuning, IMHO, best off keeping the cam duration at 220 or below.

Take a look at the two first HUGHES Engines choices on cams, the Comp Cams 260 or 268, etc. Find something similar; the MP -673 cam is okay as is the -677. Get the heads improved to flow well up to .400 (throat/bowl blend, backcut valves with 30-degree seats) and get the quench as tight as possible. Vac-sec carb (such as Thermoquad) on stock intake manifold (with the built-in EGR if you can find a mid to late seventies piece [helps cool the intake charge to avoid detonation; that is THE KEY to these heavyweights]); keep exhaust heat crossover, add duals of about 2.50-2.25" thru mufflers (Dynomax Super Hemi) then 2.25-2.00" the rest of the way. An H or X crossover won't hurt either, neither will the scavenging effects of reasonably-sized headers.

Most important is to get the compression ratio as exact as possible to work with the cam, even more so than on a race vehicle. These cars are HIGHLY sensitive to minor tuning changes, so get the distributor advance done by a pro and consult same about carb. So consider custom pistons, flat or reverse dome to get quench just right. The new MSD Ready-To-Run distributor is mightly attractive for this reason as well (far easier to change advance than on the MP Electronic), as are the Schumacher headers or, for a "balls-out" street C, the new TTI headers.

Figure for California's max octane of about 90, and you can't go wrong wherever you drive.

With a torque peak at 2800-3200, get the WOT trans shift points perfected for at or near 5000 (assuming HP peak of 46-4800), get a part-throttle kickdown (A&A Transmission). (Get their advice; or try this site as well.

If you wanna play more, then expect to change gears to at least 3.55 or 3.73, but still build for torque.

Otherwise -- as above -- build a balanced and blueprinted factory engine with a more modern cam and the know-how to live on todays crappy gasoline.

Tune, Tune, Tune . . . these biggies are all about throttle response, easy idle, incredible reliability . . and there is still only a very small selection of cars today that can outrun one on the big road.

There's a good reason MOPAR had 80% of the cop market in the late 1960's thru the early 1980's. Use an A38 package Dodge Police Pursuit as your template (very similar to above, but with only a touch more cam [and that cam -- same as in muscle car 383/440's probably only needs more lobe separation according to Ehrenberg -- to run very well.)

A big C is, admittedly, a little slow around the harbor, but as you're steaming past the small craft warning signs departing for the blue water . .

you'll know you've chosen well!

If throttle response is extra sharp then you'll have the best of both worlds: reasonable economy and the deep-breathing that no Buick, Mercury or Oldsmobile could ever hope for. Past 70 mph the others were a bad joke in stability, acceleration and braking. (Not to mention the far superior handling of a C). There is new stuff coming the way of C-Bodies, so read thru the following:

The C-Body Dry Dock

You call that Heavy??.....LOL

Good question, what engine do you have?

People will tell you, you need to get heads with bigger valves. With an engine your trying to get torque out of, that's not really true. I'm running the same heads you probably are(still assuming a big block)

If you're not into tearing the whole thing down:

a good 4 bbl carb,

an intake manifold (an newer 70 383 would be good, or go to aluminum 2 plain)

dual exhaust, headers if you like.

Electronic ignition.

And gears. You run a tall tire on that I'm sure, so 3.55's are still a decent gear. Depending how you expect it to perform on the highway. Even a 323 may be a step up from what you're using now.

It's a start. What improvements are you looking for, where are you at now?

Most any B/RB C is going to scale at 4400 or better. An option-laden New Yorker from 1969 onwards is going to be above 5000. An Imperial closer to 6000; assuming driver, full fuel and a minor amount of trunk junk.

My AC-only optioned '71 Newport scales at 4800. Add a passenger or three, some luggage and 5500 is well within range.

A 1965 Chrylser with 383 ought to come in the low end, say around 42-4400. A 383 2V likely was 2.76 geared. A 235/70-15 or 275/60-15 tire are both about 28" tall (720 revs per mile). The oem size bias-ply tire -- 855/14 -- was 28.1" tall.

I'm a long way from ontario. For that matter, what part? Ontario is huge.

I'm 3 long days drive from Toronto.

The nearest major center to me is Calgary. About 45 min from my house. My shop is in Calgary.

Just Follow the mountains North from the usa border and you'll find it on the map.

if you have the 383 2v mill you probably have the open rear diff with 2.76 gears, even with the engine you have, 3.55's or even the more common 3.23's would help get it off the line.

I have a 67 newport custom 4dr hT, definitly not light, but it moves pretty good and get's off the line great! it's basically a stock 68 "LP" 440 with 906 heads, a 670 holley street avenger and a "street hemi" grind cam with dual exhaust added
