Default Speedometer gears

I was putting the speedometer drive gear back into my truck today and looked at the gear, it had a "54" on it. The 3 ranges on the speedometer adapter only go up to "45".... im guessing the 54 isnt the tooth count? I put it in and set it on the 45 one, but didnt count the teeth and its raining now. Do i just need to count the teeth?

assuming your dealing with your 1993 dakota, 44 teeth is the highest any speedo gear goes up to in that year transmissions.

sometimes being able to see parts books and service manuals with chrysler sure helps out, especially at home hehehehe.

yeah, its for my 93. I dont see a chart in my FSM anywhere. I'll have to pull it back out tomorrow and count. They shouldnt stick a number on it when its not the tooth count! lol

That 54 is most likely the last 2 digits of the PN. That would mean that it is a 32 tooth pinion.

i would agree ehostler - the gear would then have to be black in color.

i was on a website a few days ago... i think it was either tci or transgo... and if you hunt around there for a while, you will find a large selection of speedo pinion gears AND their colors...

it is a pity that my single cell brain has a limited amount of room, and its full... lol... now i have to forget something to remember something new.

Yep, if you actually go into the Tech Archives of this forum, you will find all of the part numbers, associated tooth count, and associated colors.
