340 crank quest!
hello!
in the flywheel end of the crank, there is this hole for the centertap for the converter? right? but if I compare the hole in my 340 and in my 318, or 360, the hole in the 340 is a lot smaller! MAY THIS BE A 273 CRANK?? I'm planning using a 318 crank, because I have ordered 4 converters, and non fit both the tranny(904,27spline,non-lockup) and engine.... -Daniel |

How much difference are we talking about here?
What has probably happened, is someone has hammered in an adapter for a pilot bearing. 340, 318, and 273 cranks have the same dimensions. |

The hub diameter for all 727 and the '68 and later 904 converters is 1.810". If the register in your crank is smaller than that, it could be a '67 or earlier 273 (the early 273 crank would be finished bored to 1.550") or it could be a 340 crank that was installed with a 4-speed (does it have a pilot bushing?)
Many 340 cranks that were intended for use with 4-speeds never had the register bored for a converter. |

John is correct about the early cranks. I have had to bore a few cranks to fit the convertors. If the crank is out, any machine shop with a lathe can bore the hole. If the engine is assembled, then a special tool is required to bore the hole properly. I once used a carbide cutter on an arbor to bore the hole.

Good thing these guys are here, because, apparantly I don't know my a$$ from a small block crank.

hello, don't feel to bad about this. the 273 has some very different sizes?? I've bored out a 273 crank for a customer this year, to use a 340 convertor behind it. another thing is ,I weighed the 273 crank, compared it to my stack of 340 cranks, and found only about 1 pound difference in weights. the 273 was in the middle of the range, surprise, surprise. another myth??

hmmm
nice!
no, it's not that small,,for a 4-speed., it has to be an erly 273 crank... looks like a 1.550 bore! my problem is I want to use a 727 behind, but the converter wont fit! ...I live about 30miles from the nearest machine shop! what's best? send the crank and bore it, or install a 318 crank, and get it balanced? |
