Question One last rear end question :-)

This should be it...I got my sights on a rear end now.

I currently have a 489 one legged rear in my 72 RR. I am moving up to a 742 sure-grip clutch type, small yoke unit...which looks like...

From what I'd understand from asking on this site previously, this will slip right into my 8 3/4 rear without an issue.

Is the 742 sure-grip clutch type, small yoke unit a good one to get? I tried searching on the site here and could not find a good rear end opinion thread.

Thanks!

I have not heard of any swap problems from one suregrip to the next until...http://www.moparchat.com/forums/show...threadid=75400 dkn1997 had an issue. Otherwise, never a problem. It should swing right in. Bolt right up. The yoke size for the U joint is an issue you have allready gotten past, I would assume.
The small joint is fine for general use. The larger U joint should be considered for anything else.
I swapped in and out rear pumpkins without thought. Never a problem.

Uh oh, what's the problem with the yoke size? Does that mean my U-joint might not fit?

There are different yolk sizes, and your u joint may not work.

You may be able to find a yolk that will work on that diff with your u joint at a driveline shop.

Swapping the one you have(on the 489) doesn't work, as I believe the splines are different.

I also found this...it seemed to have some good info on the subject for me.

my problem was that whoever set up the pumpkin I bought was planning on "green axle bearings" I was running factory adjusters and could not get the play out.

turns out that the thrust block was not installed in the pumpkin and the axles had nothing to but up against (this block makes it possible to use just one adjuster to take the play out of BOTH sides)

I switched to the green bearings and it's all good now

if you are running factory adjusters, just make sure that the block (spacer) is in there.

Actually, it looks like I'm set now. Sorry if you read my previous post, but I won't need it now.
