Default stroked 340 vs stoked 360: bottom end strength

Is the bottom end of a 360 with a 4" stroke stronger than that of a stroked 340?

I would think so because the main journals are larger but I would like the opinions of those with more knowledge.

Thanks!

In my opinion, I believe that neither should be considered better or worse than each other, because you will split the cylinder wall of the block in both before the mains fail.

Yes, with what SB Mopar experience I have I can agree that this is true when using a production piece.

both are just a strong as each other - the equalizer is the 2 bolt mains. to increase strength on either you need to install 4 bolt main caps on journals 2,3, and 4. you can buy the caps aftermarket and have your machine shop set up and install them.

adding the 4 bolt mains is the preferred way to compliment the 4.00 stroke but is not necessary - not required but very preferred.

also i will agree with the above gentleman on the cylinder wall issue and add when it takes out a rod or a bearing - its always #3 or #6 anyway. lol

To attest to the strength of a 360 based stroker motor(factory block, cast crank, 2 bolt caps, eagle h-beams,Ross pistons assembled by Hensley Motorsports in Tennessee, also with edelbrock heads, victor intake, and a pair of t-4 turbochargers running in excess of 10 psi of boost), the bottom end has held up pretty well. The pistons are a different story. The one weak leak in the pistons appears to be where the valve relief extends over to far to the edge and creates a very thin area above the ring land. Had 2 pistons break in that exact spot...

The bearings and crank appear to have held up very good considering the horsepower I am making. Should be in excess of 625 at the crank(run 10.90's at almost 130mph in a 3500 lb car with 3.21 gears)

Sending one of the pistons to ross so we can come up with a way to thicken the area at that particular spot... I kno, custom pistons, but I feel I need to do this to keep any other dissasters from happening.

Re-hone,fresh bearings and a little clean up on the battered heads with the new pistons, and she should be back on the road to punish her some more.
