Smile A couple of questions for a youngn

I have a 1987 Dakota, with the 3.9L V6. One of my question's is what transmission would I have from factory? I can't find any numbers on it, what I've read on other message boards, is that I would be able to use my tranny I have now to a 318. One of my other questions would be, what rearend would I have in my truck and possibly what gears would it have? I'm going to guess someplace around 2.75's or so. Another question would be, could I expect some where between 300-350 HP at the motor with 318, stock heads, ported to match and polished, 650 Holley carb,Weiand X-CELerator Intake, and headers? I'm shooting for some where around 10.1 - 10.5 comp. ratio. Another question, I need a cam. I'm wanting some thing around .500 to .530 lift. My last question would be, would 1.6 roller rocker arms be to much, if so should i go with the 1.5 roller rocker arms, over the stock ones? What would the price be on either one of the roller rocker arms?

Thank you in advance for you help and info.

The first part of this is best answered by those in the Dakota forum. I have copied this thread into the Dakota truck forum.

I had a 94 4x4 with the 3.9.. was going to try to change it out for 383 as it couldn't be much worse on fuel..the wife wrote it off before it become a real issue though

mine had the A-500 4sd auto and 3.55 gears

as for cam.. get ahold of Don @ www.4secondsflat.com he'll get you set up with a racer brown unit that will work great..

Look at your tranny. If it has the squared off pan like a 904 it is an A 500. A 904 with o.d. basicly and it wont hold up to a lot of hp. If it looks like the old 727 then it is the A 518 which is a 727 with o.d. added to it basicly and is the stronger one of the bunch. I would bet you have the A 500. You should have an 8 1/4 axle with possible 3.55's in an auto tranny truck.

The cam specs is way too big for a 318. It will have no bottom end at all. Use a a dual pattern cam so the exhaust can breathe on that thing. Some thing in the 268 272 dual pattern range. Toss that intake and use the weiand action plus and the 1.6 rockers. The carb is too small. Use the stock thermoquad. It works best with that intake and your set up. Use the 1.6 rockers and loose those shorty headers. Dyno test prove they are only a couple hp better than manifolds. Find you a full lenght header with 1 5/8 primary tubes and use an X or H pipe. X's are better and increase low end tq as well as hp. This will work best for you too. We've built sevral 318's for dirt track cars and they will preform well if not over cammed.

\ _| My drawling sucks but it gives a decent idea hopefully. The motor is also a stock 318 2 bal. Any other idea's would be great. Thank you.

You got lucky then. The o.d. just want hold up under high hp engines. Look on hte passenger side where the dipstick goes into the tranny. If it has a kick out in the pan it's an A 727 and if the pan is straight it is an A 904.
