Default Big red wire what is it

What is the big red wire that goes to my voltmeter/ammeter guage in my 72 dart? I disconnected it and the car wouldn't start. I am going to start a custom dash. But what do i do with that wire?

Main power for the dash and ignition run thru that ammeter. If you choose to bypass it, connect the red wire with the black wire on the other side of the same gauge. That will complete the circuit and everything will work normally. Just make sure that the wires are properly isolated so nothing will short. I would solder a set of male/female spade connectors on to the two wires and heat shrink the set.....

Ausy is correct. The ampmeter reads current (amps). It has to be in series with the circuit, so when you pull the red wire off you created an "open" circuit. No power, no start. Now if it was a voltmeter, then you could take the wire off and besides the gauge no longer working everything would be fine, because it is not in series.
