Question Converters for a 727 recommendations.

Alright guys, time for another round of questions from the new guy. I have just had my tranny rebuilt, and am looking for a good converter. I should mention that this will be going on a 340 with a CAST crank (for now). I know I have to look for the weighted kind and not the zero balance type. I am also looking for a 2400-3000 stall speed. But does anyone recommend a certain manufacturer? I was looking at some B&M stuff as well as TCI. Or is anyone selling one?

I'd try www.Manciniracing.com for a TC. As far as TCI and B&M I think your going to start a riot There will be some for and against both brands. I think it will come down to your choice, still I'm sure you'll hear what you need to hear and get some good advice

I've got B&M holeshot 2400 behind my 360 and it really works well. Brother runs a 3000 TCI that works well. What is your combo? Gears, cam, intended use, etc.

Dynamic converters, Frank Lupo (dynamic) is another small buisness like Racer brown who does real good work they are much bigger than they used to be. Mancini Racing sells Dyanmic converters now so you can go through them or go to their web site..

I have a 10" Turbo Action #17805ST (tight) behind my 70 340.
It has a brake stall speed of 3200 rpms and it flashes to 3500 rpms.
When I drive it casually around, it is very smooth. But, when I step hard on the gas it makes my 340 scream!!
Paul Forte at TA talked me out of their 11" piece (I believe it was a 2400-2800 stall) for this piece and I am glad he did.

Well here is the combo I am using it on: 340 .30 over hyper pistons, forged rods, cast crank, stock ported J-heads. edelbrock performer rpm airgap, edelbrock thunder AVS 650 carb, cam is an isky 485 lift 280 duration, crane gold race 1.5 roller rockers. And soon to be ordered hooker comp headers. Rear end gearing is 3.55 right now looking to go 3.90s in the near future. I hoping just to have a really nice daily driver that I can take to the track maybe once everycouple of months and turn a low 13.

From My Book:
Almost any tork convertor will move the car and feel good.....but feeling good and working to the max potential of your engine are two entirely different scenarios.

The true test of convertor efficiency is to do the RPM calculations at the stripe and calculate the slippage.

Your can do this by going to:
http://www.prestage.com/carmath/calc_Gears.asp

Calculate the true mechanical RPM and then compare that to your tach at full throttle at the stripe.
Do the math and if it's less than 6% it's great!
If it's over 10%....well let's say I'd be under the car right now....

The second test is the flash test, hold the brake hard and slap the throttle to the floor and I mean slap, watch the tach and see where it flashes to, this is the flash RPM, the stall will be about 1-200 RPM below that number.

My Dynamic flashes at 4200 and stalls at about 4000, calculated slippage at the stripe is 3.5%

The CORRECT way to do a flash test is to advise the starter what your doing and he will allow you the time to complete the test after you exit the burnout box, it’s against NHRA and most track safety rules to conduct a convertor flash test other than in the pre-stage area of the track surface.

Doesn’t matter who’s convertor you use, do the test, ask if they guarantee these numbers.

Coen, Franklin and Dynamic are all good convertors, most others are …well let’s just say I wouldn’t waste my money on most of them.
...End

As of last month we have taken on the Dynamic line of convertors as a dealer.

Just one more item that we feel is the best possible product for your Mopar.
