Cam Decisions
After it gets cold out I will be pulling the 340 out of my challenger. I need a recommendation on a cam. This is going to be a hot street, strip car with around a 3300 or 3400 stall 410 gears either rpm air gap or small single plane intake 650 mighty demon carb ported and polished X heads tti headers forged pistons and around 10.5 to 1 comp. I have a few cams in mind that seem to be around the size i want. So lets here opinions and recommendations on these cams.
Hughes 4246 .555 .569 lift 242 246 @ 50 on a 108 Racer Brown .510 lift 242 @ 50 on a 108 Comp X energy .507 .510 lift 240 246 @50 on a 110 My goal is to be in the 12's but be able to drive it on the street when i want to. |

Do you have flow numbers on your heads and @200 duration numbers on the cams?

Run the Comp Cam, some dont like Comp. The state of the art cam profiles the grind on thier xtreme series makes a lot of this a non-issue.

I would buy the one recommended by racer brown, since he's an engineer and a mopar guy.
I've heard good things about hughes cams, but was turned off of them when I phoned for a recommendation, and got one without even providing a compression ratio. Comps are state of the art, and I would definately buy one, if I had a chevy.(since that is what they are researched and ground for) Not trying to start a flaming session, and everyone has their own opinion, but cleary this is not a non-issue. |

Your right the comp i really should of put down is the one for the mopar lifter which i thought that was but here is the actual one
241 247 @ 50 .545 .545 lift on a 110 Why is it that the racer brown has so much less lift than these two cams? |

The comp extreme is not ground for a chevy or the smaller lifter. The racer brown cam is just one of many profiles he grinds. The size has little to do with a head to head compare on how it will perform in it's right application where as the wrong cam will perform worse.
Just because it's smaller doesn't mean less performance. |

One other thing to look for is duration @ .200. I'll use this as tie breaker on lift vs @ .050 numbers.

Does anyone have experience with any of these cams or similar size in their small blocks?

I am changing cams this winter. I have a Crower 510 242@ 50 hyd. in there now. What a dog for an auto. I had 4.10 and a 2500 stall. It was a D-O-G dog! 9.75 1/8 sad for sure.
Now same cam with a 4 speed and 3.54 it runs 8.40s with a crap 2.05 60 ft.. However, Jim at R.B. knows his stuff. Thats where I'm going!! |

Well with a 2500 stall i bet that cam was a dog my stall is going to be a lot higher than that.
