plug wires
I got my 69 Super Bee w/440 back yesterday. I got new rear and axle seals, rear brakes and they stopped the header exhaust leak (helicoil seems to be working great!). I told them it was backfiring a lot and they said it could be timing. It definitely could run a LOT stronger but it was not running bad (except for the backfiring). They said they could not get a correct timing so did the best they could??? They mentioned I might need new plugs (25 miles on the new plugs from a weeks ago) and that's when I said I need to pick the car up now so I did. They also said the carberator needs rebuilt but I am planning on buying a new 750 Demon. They also mentioned the plug wires (long way to get to question but thought history would help) could be getting too hot. I have them separated and away from the headers and engine as much as possible but they are just regular plug wires and they are very hot. Would a better heat resistant plug wire help and be worth the money? Is this a no brainer to get them anyway? If so, what are your recommendations, comments, brands etc.. I don't have any brackets for wires right now but am looking into that also so would take any suggestions.
Thanks. |

Yes it is worth getting a good heat resistant wire. Taylor, MSD, and Moroso to name a few are good wires. Best advise is to buy the best lookin' wire that does the job for the best price, not the cheapest price. I use Taylor only because that is all I have used.

MSD 6119 are 8mm adjustable angle boot wires....that's about all we sell these days $69.95 or Summit at $64.00 plus the $7-8 handling charge.
Taylor Moroso are also very good and will read about 500 ohms per foot when new, I tested a set of new wires of unknown source yesterday and they were 2000 ohms out of the box...Yikes! |

The Speed Shop here had Taylors for about $40 so I got them on yesterday. Didn't make a difference. Just found out the "supposedly" new plugs I had were bad. They put new one's in and now no backfiring and it running great. I have not drove yet. Could this really have been what was causing SO much of my problems?

You probably had mulyip[le problems...Bad plugs causing high resistance and weak wires that were allowing the spark to cross fire from one wire to the next.
You should also check your cap for tracking.....you do have the blue Standard X series cap and rotor right? |

I currently am running Accel 300+ Race Wires on my Roadrunner, but if I change them I'm switching to the MSD Super Conductors because they have the least resistance, less than 50 ohms per foot resistance. I have the MSD Super Conductor wires on my Neon R/T as well.
