Default 440 Compression Questions

Got my engine out detailing it and went to turn the crank to find tdc and I hear gurgling noises coming from inside the engine with the oilpan off.... I take it this is not good....

If the spark plugs are still in it you are probably just hearing the compression bleed as you rotate it. If this is the case it is normal.

That is when I hear it.... so the bleed doesn't necessarilly mean bad rings??

Also, can acurate compression be tested by hand turning the engine.?

Thanks,

No, the engine should be rotated at starter speed. You can however perform a leak down. For best results the leak down should be performed on a hot engine but either way you will get an idea of any major problems.

How do you do a leak down check?

You need a leak down tester and a compressor. The piston is at TDC and the valves are closed. You hook the tester up to the compressor and depending on the gauge zero it at 0 or 100. Then hook it up to the cylinder you are testing. It will then tell you how much leakage you have. If you hear air from the carb then the intake valve is leaking, same with ex. or air from the valve cover would mean the rings are leaking. A certain amount of leakage past the rings is acceptable especially on a cold engine but the amount will depend on mileage. Any more than about 15-20% on a high mileage engine is bad.
