318 to 360?
Could a 318 be swapped out for a new 360(380hp) crate engine without having to fabricate new mounts?
The engine is in a '89 Fifth Avenue. Would the stock tranny hold that, or would it be better to switch to something like a 727? This is for a stock vehicle with 93k miles on it, and would be daily driven. Thanks for any insight. |

You will need a new drivers side motor mount. I think the fifth ave. may have had a 360 option, so the dealer may be able to get the correct engine mount.
I don't know too much about the crate engines, but I think they come with the correct oil pan for a passenger car? The 360 is externally ballanced, so the dampner and torque converter are unique to the 360 engine. I think the crate engines come with the crank dampner, but you will need the correct ballance torque converter or special B&M Flexplate (about $80). The 380 Hp 360 should use a higher stall torque converter than the stock one anyhow. Your transmission will work, but I would upgrade to a 727 (and torque converter) or maybe even a 518 OD transmission, since you might want to run more gear with the new engine. |

You couldn't get a car with a 360 after 1980 or 1981.
Keep your 904 until it dies and then switch to a 727. You will need to add the proper weight to the torque converter tho. You will also have to plan on changing your rear end to an 8 1/4 at some point too. The 7 1/4 ones that they came with won't last behind a 360 too long. The quality of those crate engines is questionable. Some people get good ones and some people don't. If it's just a bit more power you're after I'd go after a rebuilt 360 or find a used 360 in good condition and use that. If you just drive in the city don't plan on getting any good gas milage out of it. |
