Default steering coupling ,remove,repair,replace

ok I have my steering box off and i want to take off the coupling to refresh it.. I dont know how to get it off. I dont want to just start beating on stuff , but i cant figure out how it comes off. second do i just buy the rebuild kit and repack it with grease???? I dont think i even understand what exactly this thing does.

anyone have any input.. also...

I got the pitman arm off with a puller, but how are you supposed to get it back on?

Just curious, what are you actually doing? Removing steering column for a new one? Or Converting from Column shift to Console? Because I will be converting from Column shift to console so I just wanted to know if I should follow this closey and learn a thing or two

Cheers mate

gain a little power, loose a little weight and even with a firm feel hi po steering box , its still a little squirly at 120MPH. Manual should cure that a little.

Cheers, I thought that you couldn't get better than Power steering I know that you have to be a Body-builder to move these cars around with manual steering Sounds very interesting

Manual sterring isn't as bad as you would think. Try driving one of thiese things with the belt off of the PS pump... Now that is a tough job at anything below 5 MPH... LOL

manual steering with a tuff wheel, a big block, and 245/45 16's up front is next to impossible, trust me

to answer your original question, yes some beating might be required if it has been on there for 30+ years. you can get coupler rebuilt kits, comes with the shims, a new pin and a new seal so the only original item left is the coupler and column shaft.

I got my kit on ebay, but I am sure the mopar dealer has them, not that a catalog exists for you to look or anything, and the guy behind the counter will have no idea what you want and it will cost 3 to 4X what you would pay elsewhere!!!

LOL mp parts guys, just yanking your chain a bit

There is a pin that keeps the coupling tightly on the steering shaft that you will have to remove. This will have to be removed by way of hammer and drift. The coupling will slide right off after the pin is removed. You should get a new pin with the coupling kit. The pin is located on the lower part of the coupling, right next to where the coupling engages the steering box. There are a couple of parts that can wear out inside the coupling that come with the kit as well as a smaller pin used to keep it all in the coupling, as well as a rubber gasket and metal cover. It's actually a very easy rebuild once you have it all out. You can find pictures in a mopar manual to help out. I took out the steering column along with the coupler and cleaned, repainted everything, then reattached the coupler to the column while I had it sitting on my desk. Much easier for me this way.

You might want to check, I think you may need a different coupling to go from power to manual steering. I have seen them advertised new in Mopar Collectors Guide and Mopar Muscle.

You can also get new manual boxes from Flaming River I think that they have a lower steering ratio.

You will enjoy parking your car with manual steering, just kidding, it's not too bad, you'll get used to it.

Good Luck!

For all of you that are using manual steering and think it's a baer to steer, next time your near an alingnment shop have them to add more positive caster to both wheels and the turning effort will be less.

dwc, are you sure about POS caster? My alignment shop told me that manual steering cars came with NEG caster to make it easier to steer at low speed.

my car was a manual steering car from the factory. I converted it to power and my guy told me he put POS caster back in it for better control under speed. that's when he told me about the neg caster for slow speed maneuvering.
