Cool Backfiring thru the carb

Lately my 340 is backfiring thru the carb and doesn't want to idle when it's cold. By the way it's has a 650 mighty demon and an air gap. Any ideas why????

It's a lean condition. Richin up the jets and if it also happens when your driving down the road and then hit the gas, adjust the pump shot as well for more fuel in the shot.

Only when its cold? Check the choke operation.

my 340 will give a pop if i give it too much gas in the cold, untill it warms up. it also won't idle when cold, and when i choke it (manual choke) too much, it'll start running very rough... no choke = smooth... block heater helps, but doesn't eliminate it... i just let it warm up (160 stat needs to be replaced with 180 in winter ) and it's fine.

hey rumble, turns out i gotta live with the carb...moms gonna drive the firebird, and dads got the exploder while the pickup ('93 chebby TBI) goes in the shop for some body work...yukons do some pretty good tweaking in a bad way

Now is the perfect time to learn the carb and live with the mistakes of owning only a hotrod. You'll learn quicker being this is your car and only transport. (Even if you have mom & dads car, live with just yours.)
Don't forget to write down how it is now and what changes you have made. This will give a clear track record of how it performs. If you make a mistake, go back to the last setting. Just do 1 change at a time. This will make the process slow, but reliable in proof that what you did was correct or not. If you did 2 (or more) changes at once, and it works worse or better, which change was it?

hedgehog, good catch. Forgot that one.

Don, your a good man.
