HELL.......a decently built 904 would live behind a 400 hp 360.

BUT - it seems to me (from the reports that I hear) that it would take a HEFTY 727 tweaked by TCI to do the same job as that lite-weight 904 !!

Alvin Leeper (of leeper transmissions in Garden City, Kansas). it was all stock, had it rebuilt with shift kit (dunno what kind, dad handled that) and racing bands etc. also installed a 5" kickdown lever. i also ordered a lokar cable for it.

haven't had a problem with it.

to be honest, my dad handled that rebuild, and just told me a few things (i was only 15). alvin does awesome work and warrenties the trans for 3 months and sets up a check-up date at the end of 3 months just to check things over

AAMCO,

It was rebuilt before I owned the car but the rebuild still kicks but. I was tearing it up down I95 today from Jacksonville NC to Fredricksburg Va with no problems. Its been 5,000 daily driver miles in all conditions with no adjustments no problems. My 2 cents.

ANY person adept and capable of using hand tools and following a service manual (and having some of the SPECIALTY toolz) could rebuild a Torqueflite and have it last for a looooong time.

The same can not be said for a torque converter.

Mr. F where could a person find such a manual(s), and which would you recommend for the beginner looking for some performance?

71satellite,

I've rebuilt several just using a genuine Chrysler service manual (mine is a '69 Dodge manual).

They are pretty darn good at gettin the point across.

There is nothing to be afraid of when rebuilding a trans. Careful planning and a clean workbench are very important!!

Hay Sat...........a regular Chrysler service manual is fine but beware....you must either make or buy some specialty tools to do the job correctly.

Just grab one of those manuals..........read one at the library - and see if this is a job that you might want to tackle.

The factory manual is great for straight overhauls but not for performance rebuilds.
One good book is Carl Munroe's 727 handbook, it's available at amazon.com and other bookstores.
If you're more inclined to have the trans built, talk to John Cope at CRT, he's got a great reputation and specializes in Torqueflights.

Factory Service manuals show up on e-bay all the time. Reprints are available from many sources including Year One and they are offered on CD's also.
The transmissions did change from year to year so it's best to have the correct year manual for your trans.
My photo album shows many of the changes in the 727 over the years:

Using a factory service manual, some of the tech-tips from Ma Mopar, some good aftermarket parts and just what I have learned from hands-on experience is all I have ever needed.

NOW - if you want to start building 727 trannies with 904 guts for the SS/AA boyz......... THAT is a diff story !!
