Question diesel 5&6 spd trans questions

The boss called last nite, he lost 5th gear in his '97 3500 Dodge yesterday. What's the gear ratio of 5th in a 5 spd? And, what's the gear ratios in 5th and 6th in the newer 6 speeds? Will a newer 6 spd bolt in place of his current 5 spd? And what does it cost to repair the 5th gear in the 5 spd?

I'm not the best on diesel info by any means, but IIRC I think there was a recall on this. There was a nut that retained the gear that would come loose and you would lose overdrive. I'd call and ask around, getting it fixed under recall would have to be a lot cheaper than just paying for it.
Not a mortal injury at any rate, should be repairable.
Anyone with better info, please chime in!

There is not recall for the loss of fifth gear, but there is a technical service bulletin for the fifth gear retaining nut backing off and dissengaging.
Will need to replace the gear, use a revised lock nut with red thread lock to help hold it on.
Not to hard to do, just remove tailhousing to repair gears.
I did have one that the fifth gear teeth came apart on the main shaft and the countershaft and was over 1000 dollars for just the gears.
Only seen one like this though, more than likely will just take the gear and nut.
