Default A-Body Aluminum K-frame???

A friend has a 68 Dart, 2 dr post he wants to sell me for a grand. It includes parts he was collecting to make a Super Stock clone. A 100 van seats, lots of good trim, and according to him a big block aluminum K-frame. Did anybody ever hear of one of these? If so are they prone to cracking, and good for street use?? The car is straight , but has some floor & trunk rust, Framerails are good and 1/4 panels are good as are front inner fenders. If anyone knows about these aluminum K-frames I'ld appreciate info, Thanks

Default K-Members

I've never heard of an aluminum K-member. There were some special stainless steel K-members made for the '64-'65 B-body Hemi cars, the 1965 A/FX cars if I remember correctly. The '68 BO and LO cars had a special K-member, but they were 273 units with the Hemi mounts welded on to them.

I remember reading about 1 of these in a mag years ago. I always wanted one. Dont be surprised if the engine mounts set back farther than on a factory k-member.

A you sure the K-frame isn`t magnezium (spelling?)
There were a few of those made but they were dangerous..If I remember right someone was killed using one, it shattered when it came down from a wheel stand...
I could be wrong.

I think it was Don Carlton who was killed piloting the motown missile.

yeah, i heard of the magnesium K's before. I don't think this one is magnesium though. I think the old wheelstanders used blocks of magnesium under their wheelie bars, so at night they made showers of sparks, nice show. , maybe i'll tie this K to my rear bumper and drag it down the street at night, if it sparks like crazy I'll know its magnesium.

Default bad idea dragging magnesium

If it catches fire you won't be able to put it out. Once it starts burning it likes to stay on fire, you need to remove all oxygen and allow to completely cool. A better metal is titanium but if it catches fire same thing will occur most metals are this way. I once saw a guy cut a VW/ Porsche transaxle (made of magnesium) with a cutting torch the piece that fell off was dancing on the floor very bright and hot, had to trap it in sand, made a odd looking piece of glass.

Smile Come on, Brad

Brad, you don't need that lightweight k frame, just build some more grunt, and be done with it! Hope to see you at CFR next year. Leigh

Idea GRUNT

Yeh I know your right.I'm in the process of building a nice little humper as we speak. I'm just having a hard time getting time to do my own stuff. Seems I'm always working on that BRAND X stuff.
How does this sound for power full race ported W2,340 block bored .030 over,12to1 ross pistons,3.79 stroke crank, full roller of course.395 cubes.Went to a glide 2 years ago which made the car consistent just slowed it down a bit not a lot just a bit.
I figured more cubes and stroke would help.
I didn't want the k-member for my car I just would like to put it on a shielf for the future?
My wife gave me the ok to quit my job if I don't have the week day shift by next spring. I'm not gonna miss another year of racing just to work at Target. But it sure looks good on a job aplication. You guys have your banquit yet?

340duster1,

Just for the record, Don Carlton died in a testing accident in Milan, MI driving an extended wheelbase Dodge Colt in '77.
So a conventional K-frame wasn't involved.

But he did drive the Motown and later Mopar Missile Pro Stockers.

Smile

Just kidding, Brad. We sure missed not getting down to CFR this year. It was one comedy of error's after another. I made a total of 7 trips down the track. That sounds like a REALLY nice smallblock your building! Can't wait to see and hear it run next year. Take care.
