What's wrong with my 4sp.?
I'm having a bit of trouble with the 4sp in my 68 Bird. On the up shift, 1st through 4th it goes into gear no problem. Down shifting its near impossible to get in without giving er on the throttle. More so 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd. Seems 2nd to 1st is fine. Then back upshifting is good. It doesn't grind when at a stop going into 1st or any other gear for that matter. The car came with a 4sp from the factory then the 2nd owner changed it to auto, the last owner chandged it back to original. Do you think maybe the shifter needs adjusting? I'm sure its a Hurst shifter. Can they be adjusted? If so how would I go about doing it? The 833 is all new to me as I've had autos in my Mopars in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the syncro's to me! Try double clutching it see if it helps, if so that the problem. To double clutch simply shift as normal, but stop in nuetral release the clutch then depress it again and shift into the desired gear. Give brewere's 4-speed a call the can hook you up with some parts.

A clutch adjustment, may help, but I don't think a shifter adjustment will make a difference.
I doubt an adjustment will solve the problem. Sounds like it needs syncro's. There may be additional parts needed as well. The teeth on some of the gears/ hubs are known to get worn/chipped as well. Your only interm action would be a trans oil change. This may make a difference in quality. What it sounds like, is that the syncro's are unable to equalize the speed between the shift hubs ect, on down shift. Usually this is because they are worn out. |

I thought of it being the syncros but isn't there a little grinding involved in that? Maybe there would be if it went in at all.

You can probably make it grind, if you force it.
Try the oil change, and save your pennies. |

Pull the pan off the bottom of the bellhousing, get someone topush the clutch pedal to the floor. You should be able to get a .020" feeler gauge between the disc and the flywheel or pressure plate. If you are not getting this much clearance, your clutch is not disengaging fully and you will experience hard shifting, more so on downshifting.
Try adjusting the clutch, also check the linkage, if the linkage is installed right, flexing, incorrect components if things have been "changed" over the years, etc. |

There is a lot of pedal play at the top. I took a good look at the rod and it seems to be a home built one. Do the stock rods have an adjustment built into them? My Jeep had a 2 piece with adjustment in the center of it. The adjustment at the bellcrank is almost at the end now.
