Default I think this is bad..8 1/4 rearend

I was bleeding the brakes on the Valiant, started at the back passenger side, pulled off the drum (I have known for a while that my axel seal was leaking) to see how bad the leak was, and the brakes were COVERED in 90w! No big deal Im changing to a 8 3/4 soon. But... I can move the axel shaft up and down about 1/2 in!!! Now I know where all that noise is comming from!! I mean you can see a gap between the shaft and the seal!! I knew it was bad but holy s@%t!! Anyone need a free 8 1/4 rearend!!

Sure. Send it on. I can fix that in aobut 15minutes and have it ready to go back under a car. Just a bad bearing that ruined the seal and possibly the axle since you did not service it when you heard the problem. By the way the 1/4 replaced teh 3/4 and is very equal in strenght to a 3/4. The reason mostly was cost, but the 3/4 has a housing flex problem that can break caps and strip axle splines. Moser makes a weld on back brace to help prevent this housing flex. The ferd 9 inch has the same flex problem and moser makes a back brace for them too. Any rear that uses a front removable center section will have a housing flex problem.
I'd also add a c clip eliminator kit to the 1/4 for ease of axle retension and removal.

It is a fairly easy fix. Bearing axle and seal.

I don't think it's a 15 min fix, unless uppers are big in your diet..LOL

Just don't drive it the way it is.
