Rear axle removal help
Set about removing the entire 8 1/4 rear axle + springs in order to swap gears and replace springs, but have hit a bit of a wall. Removing the leaf springs and axle seems simple enough, but Im a bit confused and pissed off...
Firstly, the rear springs are bolted to a shakle which is bolted to the frame and allows it to flex back and forth, I assume this is on most cars and trucks, I took a look at the bolt, and theres a nut on the outside, and on the inner side all there is are threads. Am I supposed to remove the outer bolt and punch the thread out? I broke one nut already The front bracket Ive removed the nut from the outer side, does the bolt thread out now? How can I make sure the full spring weight isnt waiting to take my arm off while I thread it out? Do I jack the pumkin up all the way? Thanks |

O.K. on the rear hanger you have to remove both nuts on the one side and the hole bracket slides out of hte bushings. The stubds are welded to the other plate and cant be knocked out.
On the front look behind the bolt that goes through the sprin and you'll find r nuts. Remove them and the whole bracket with spring and bolt will pull away from the frame. There is no spring tension on the rear springs when it's hanging in the air with the wheels off the ground. You might want to use a jack to take a little weight off the springs so you can remove the shackle and bolts more easier. |

Sorry to hear that. Hope you dont have to torch a hole into the frame to remove it. I had to cut a hole in a diamond treaded box on an Ambulance one time to replace the rear spring on the drivers side. It was so heavy I had an air operated 5 ton jack under it witha 5 ton pump jack and several stands. Luckly it did not fall and I got the job done. It was still under warranty while I worked for the dealer.
