Default 318 To A 340/360

WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO TURN MY 318 INTO A 340 OR 360? MY UNDERSTANDING IS THEY USE THE SAME BLOCK AND THE 340 IS JUST DIFFERENT HEADS, BUT IM PROBABLY WRONG. I KNOW I WILL HAVE TO BORE THE CYLS TO GET IT TO THE 360 BUT IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO DO IF I ATTEMPT THIS BESIDES SWAP HEADS?

The 340 has a completely different bore, bigger than the 360 even. I am ALMOST certain and don't hold me to this, you can't bore out a 318 to a 340. Nor can you bore it out to a 360. I am not sure of the difference between the 340-318 crank as they have the same stroke. Wonder if they are interchangable?...

The 318 has a bore of 3.910. The 360 has a bore of 4.00. The 340 has a bore of 4.04. You can't bore a 318 out to a 340 bore, or a 360.

The 318 and 340 cranks are the same (as is the 273) except the 340 has heavier counterweights. But you can use the 318 crank in a 340 block, just balance it (same goes for the 273).

The 273/318/340 crank all have the same stroke (3.313) and the same main bearing size. I forget what it is. Being old sucks. The 360 has a longer stroke (3.590) and bigger main bearings. You can turn a 360 crank down to 318/340 mains and put it in a 318 or 340 as a cheap stroker. Takes special pistons (unless you can find a .020 over 340 block. Yhen you can use .060 over 360 pistions and it's a bolt in deal). But LOTS of guys do it.

318-340 can be interchanged in the crank dept. 360 has a larger stroke and larger mains. A 318 cant be bored to a 4.04 to get the 340 pistons in there. You may be able to do it on paper but that is what the walls will be at that overbore. 340/360 has a slightly different passenger mount ear location that can be fixed with a few washers between the old 318 mount and the new 340/360 block.

The largest bore you can get out of a 318 will be 3.97 at .060 over giving you 328 cubic inches. I know 'cause I have one for sale. Add a turned down 3.58 stroke crank out of a 360 and you should net cubes about 355. Real common stroker combo as it's used in circle track a lot. If you do that, also change the dampner as the 360 is externally balanced while the steel forged 318/340 crank is internal. You would have to take the complete rotating assy in for balancing before assembly in the block...

Did one of you fella mention that special pistons would be required? If so what kind? That sounds like an awesome, sleeper type build up!!!! What would the tota; cubes be with .30 overs I dont have my calculator?

.030 on a 318 will bring you around 323. Those pistons should be shelf items, unless you want a particular compression height, etc. For inexpensive pistons that work well on a mild build, I would recommend the Sealed Power line. For a few extra bucks, you can go with KB Silvolite hypers or all the way up the line to Arias forged....
