hemi bell housing
How can you tell the diff. between the big block blowproof bellhousing and the hemi bellhousing?
I got a blowproof bellhousing on line and when I went to bolt up my starter, the starter gear was almost 1/2 inch away from the flywheel. Found in my mopar chassis book that the 66-69 hemi's used a 11 inch flywheel with 172 teeth, were as the rest of the flywheels had 130 teeth. I can't use this bellhousing and need the standard bellhousing for a 130 tooth flywheel for a big block? Can anyone help me? |

You could up grade to the bigger flywheel and clutch.

Thanks for the help.
I am putting this into a circle track car and am trying to keep my rotating mass low. Where could I get the bigger flywheel and clutch from? My book said the 11 inch 172 tooth flywheel is the 8 bolt pattern and will not fit onto the non-hemi cranks. |

Check Summit Racing under mopar performance. They also have an 18.5 lb netraul balnced flywheel too. You can get it and a new Lakewood blow proof from them too. We use it on our circle track cars. Id you need any race parts e mail me. We have tube A arm kits, brake kits for front and rears and all sorts of circle track parts. Should have our web site up soon too. E mail me at ******************** and I'll try to give you a good price on what you need. Thanks

You can't use the 172 tooth wheel. It takes a different starter than what 99% of all Mopars use. The blow proof bell is set up for the typical Mopar gear reduction starter. You will need an aftermarket 8 bolt 143 tooth wheel.

I decided to go to the lakewood web page and found it at the mrgasket.com site.
They sell a starter adapter kit for the big block bell housings. They state that this kit is required to relocate the starter when a 130 tooth flywheel is utilized. Why they don't make the bellhousing for the 130 tooth flywheel and make an adapter for the 143 and 172 tooth flywheel, this would make more sense, because 99% of the big blocks use the 130 flywheel. Thanks for the help. |

The original Lakewoods were made for each ring gear diameter but to save tooling costs they went to a one-size-fits-all years later.
The starter adapter kit is supplied with each new housing but these usually get lost when buying used. |
