Default High amp alternator for 72E small block

In reading the posts here, I am leaning towards installing electric water pump and electric fan(s) on my 72 Cuda with 360. Also an elec fuel pump. I plan to build a 3 or 4 circuit relay/fuse panel under the hood to power this stuff.

I take the advice that I will need a higher amp alternator than whatever came with the car.

If I go to Anvanced Auto parts, for what vehical do I order an alternator for that will fit the small bracket brackets and single v-belt pully, but will pump out big time amps?

Can I use my original volt reg, or do I need a different one?

Does anybody sell a 4 channel relay/fuse panel for when adding a bunch of high amp electrical stuff?

Anybody understand how the two different fields work on mopar alternator systems (I think they changed from 1 field to 2 fields in the 20/71/72 timeframe?

Thanks, Tim

Your main concern will be the bulk head conncetor and the amp meter. The 65amp alt should be plenty. I sell a fan through my shop that flows 2450 cfm and onlt pulls 12 amps and should not need a relay at all. We dont use one on our car, just a high amp sealed switch and a 20a fuse. The electric pump should not need a realy either, but I'll have to check to see what the current draw is. The 65 amp should be plenty, but if you want to up grade all police cas used a 100 amp alt with small and big block power. And the stock regulator will work fine. The dual fields get pwoer all hte time. The reg floats the ground on one field wire and that determines when it chargers or not.

If your set on a Hi output alternator. Try and find on of the mid 80's mopar unit. You can tell these easily because they have a THIN stator,( The part between the two case halfs) that the standard unit. The cases are more rounded than the stock units too. I forgot what the output is, but it cures the dim light ills and has plenty of juice.

use this alt and you can easily run what you plan, plus have plenty of room for more accessories, easy install too.

IMHO, you shoud use relays on high draw items such as cooling fans, fuel pumps, etc.... they are so cheap that it makes no sense not too, better safe than sorry.

dwc is right on the money on the bulkhead connector, at minimum, take it apart and clean it and use some dielectric grease on the contacts. if you run a thick (0,2,4 gauge) wire between the alt and the starter relay, you can leave the amp gauge. I did this and found that the only side effect was that the amp gauge is not accurate anymore. eliminating it is also not a bad idea.

here is a great link that shows the mopar charging system, shortcomings, and how to fix them

Thanks to all for the alternator answers. The link to another thread which discussed the firewall bulkhead connector getting burned and the ampmeter getting toasted was very interesting.

Thanks, Tim

I checked the madelectric link but Im confused on the two wires from the alt going to the relays. Do you disconnect them where theyre supposeed to go on the stock wiring and run them to the relays ?
