Biggrin 65 Hemi Satellite

Well. I finally did it. Took the chance and bought a crate Hemi. Pulled the pan and checked the bearing and rod clearences. Believe it or not everything was in spec.
Switched oil pans to fit it in the 65. Used Shumachers new Hemi mounts for a 65 "B" body along with the suggested TTI headers for same. Everything...EVERYTHING fit as advertised.
Maybe the later crate engines are better than some of the eariler ones? No wiped cam, no metal chips, no oil burning, no leaks, etc. I did have what I thought was excessive valve rattle. I turned the rockers down a 1/4 turn and all is well. Oil press is 65 # @2000 and 40#hot @950.
After all the negative things that have been posted about Ma Mopar and her crate engines I just wanted all to know maybe they don't screw up every time.
This one came from Hayes Dodge in Atlanta. They were very helpful with ordering, price, and delivery.
Now I want to put one of Don's new electronic boxs and maybe replace the 850 Holly with a demon. I not sure the 2.5 exhaust are big enough? Any opinions on that?

BTW....ate one Mustang already. He never knew what hit him.............

That is one nice looking engine bay! Sweet ride! Now post some video of that mustang stomping.

I think all of us would like to hear that the quality of the crate engines has improved! Glad that you had a good experience.

BTW, how do you like those TTI headers? I love mine!

Later,

Greg

Default Hemi exh

Nice ride!! your right though that 2.5" exh is choking that firebreather, run 3" and be sure to use 3" in and out on the mufflers as well as 3" tailpipes, most exh shops will whine about bending up 3" tailpipes so you might want to buy tti's setup,......PRO.....

When I was at that power level, going from 2.5" to 3" didn't help. But a lot of it depends of whatkind of mufflers, bends etc are int he current exhaust, if they are OK I wouldn't hurry with a bigger exhaust.

I have never heard any bad about the crate Hemi engine. I have only heard and read bad about the crate small blocks... Or they could finally be cleaning up QC issues...

Biggrin 65 Hemi Satellite

Thank you all for the compliments. It was a lot of work and iI know most of you Guy's understand the effort.
GSM, the TTI headers seem ok, no leaks or bumps anywhere. I really did not have a choice other than to custom make them myself because the new style Shumacher mounts keep the engine in the original location.
I needed original location because of the console 4 speed. And having hand built a set of headers one time years ago I did not want to tackle it again.
Mufflers are 2.5 Dynomax Super Turbos.
Oh, one thing I failed to mention (Also the Mustang fail to note), even though the 426 emblems keep the nostalgic look under the hood, the engine is a 472.

Crossram huh???........ Abuse your the second person thats suggested I put a cross ram on this thing. The other one was my wife. We had a 65 coronet with a max wedge set up and she loved the attention it got at car shows. People will trip over a Chebby to get a look at a crossram. That something I'm thinking about later. One four sure is easier to deal with and tune.
dcw1997, You to can have a Hemi. Just put your mind to it and eat pinto beans and cornbread for a few years like I did. OR, maybe win the lottery.................

Yea, as for a 1/4 mile pass I probably won't be able to stand it. I'll have to do one or two along the way. Maybe at the Mopar show at Atlanta Dragway this year. I know street tires will kill it and slicks woul probably kill the transmission and/or the 742.
I would like to hear for you Guys on the 3 inch exhaust system. and Don on whether I could benefit from his new style ignition box and a bigger carb. Anyone ever heard of pressure testing to check exhaust efficiency?

New pic attached.....

My 65 Valiant ran 12.50s with 3" exhaust and 13.0s with 2.5",and it was a smallblock.Every Mopar Ive ever had always ran faster with open headers which means any exhaust was producing some restriction, almost all my cars have had 3" exh.Ive been dragracing at the strip for 18yrsto prove it to yourself you could hook up a vaccum gauge to the intake and go run a 1/4mi,watch the reading in top gear, then repeat it with open headers,if the reading is lower than your exhaust is restrictive........PRO......

Unless your runnig over 650 plus horse the 3 inch pipes are not needed. A simple 2.5 with merge X pipes would be all you really need unless you get way up there in hp.

If you ever decide to take the plunge and go for a crossram I would be interested in your single four barrel intake. I am building a 472 stroker and will need an intake down the road. If you would please keep my e-mail address and e-mail me if you decide to sell it.

Will do Moulder. Even though I don't have the heat riser ports hooked up on the present 4 barrel intake it is still not as cold natured as the wedge crossram I had was. I will sure let you know if I go crossram.
Keep the faith........BB
