The purpose is to take advantage of the greater amount of stored energy in the smaller bar (requires more preload to maintain ride height) to increase front lift at launch. This in turn transfers weight to the rear to decrease wheelspin. The MP catalog offers an even smaller set for drag purposes. I would be wary of using them on the street.

Yeh, torsion bar rigidity should be favored for street cars. I would never recommend going for a thinner bar if its gonna see any sort of corners in its life

but yeh, if its gonna be a drag car, yer going in the right direction.

I ran a set of 6cyl bars in my '70 Dart with a 360. It didn't corner well, but got out of the hole nicely. Putting in new torsion bars ins't that big of a deal. Try the 6cyl and see what you think. I didn't like them on the street.
