Default where can I find an image of 1970 383 beside 400?

Can anyone suggest where, online, I can find a picture of a 1970 383 engine and a picture of a1970 400 engine? And maybe even a picture of a 1976 400 engine while we are at it.

I am looking for easy to find distinguishing features between them.

That is physical features that can be seen by just lifting the hood of the car.

PS-if there is a better forum in which to post this question, please let me know so that I can move it.

Thanks
chris

I'm not sure about the years you are asking about, but we compared a '74 400 to a '69 383 and as I recall, the only obvious differences were the intake manifold (EGR), the exhaust manifolds(size and ribs), valve covers(emissions) and of course the electronic ignition distributor.

P.S.......Almost forgot the cast crank damper on the 400.

Was there even a 70 400?

I didn't think they came that early, I thought late 71 was the first year(I could be wrong... just what I remembered)

Gary s is right though. The differences are in the manifolds and valve covers. The later 400 and 440 would have had a thermobog carburetor too. air cleaners vary by year and application, also.m
The 440 is visably different fron the 383 and 400, because of the stamping pad in front of the intake on the drivers side of the engine.

70 383 manifolds, and valve covers will fol anybody, who isn't carefull enough to look at the dampener.

I'm doing pretty much the same thing with my 330. using a 67 440 in place of a 426 wedge. Vintage valve covers, with aftermarket manifold, headers and carb. No difference between a 440 dampener and a 426 one.

The 383 and the 400 are the same block. The only difference is the bore (and you can't see that from the outside).

There is a machined pad near the distributor (at an angle). It has the engine size stamped on it.

The 400 becane standard in 1972. There might be a few cores from 1970, but I bet they are rare. The 400 only came with a cast crank so the obvoius difference will be the harmonic balancer. The cast will have weights cast in and look larger than the 383's. 383's came with forged cranks. Same deck height for both so looking at them side to side is like looking at the doublemint twins!

The block size is also cast into the left side of the block.

The 71 400 block is an excellent choice for the 451 stroker combo......the blocks were referred to as "industrial blocks" for the big truck divsion of Dodge. They were sold mostly to state & federal motor pools & some major compamys requiring their use. I was told some time ago (rumor) that Hensley in Knoxville, Tenn, has aquired over 30 of these blocks. This was from a guy who was claiming to be in the process of buying one. He told me these blocks had beefier mains & thicker ribs on the sides.
