Default Transmission Woe

The 727 in my coronet has been a bad boy. The tranny wont engage in D I have to shift down to 1 to get it to catch then I can put it back in D. If I come to a stop with it in D the tranny slips and makes this whining sound, then I put it back in 1 and you can hear it catch again and it stops whining and drives off. This happened all at once and was not a slow process I have absolutely no clue about trannys and your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You. Jason

You need to take it to a tranny shop now. Not sure by your description, but it might be a sprag problem. If it is, dont drive it at all. If the sprag exsplodes it will destroy the tranny and the tranny tunnel too. Better have it checked soon.

There is a problem with the one way clutch that holds in first gear.

By manually shifting to 1 you are by passing it by applying the low/reverse band.

The last time I had a transmission do this, it turned out the one way clutch had caused the case to crack.

The one way clutch is quite a ways into the trans. The trans will be completely torn down to repair it(assuming the case isn't cracked.

If you have a spare, put it in, it will be way cheaper.

I'm gonna have to agree with Dave on this one.

If Dura-Built transmissions is still around (I have lived in CA for many years), I would recommend taking the car to them or pulling the tranny and taking it to them.

About 10 years ago I had the 727 in my '68 charger go out (a cooling line sprung a leak and sprayed most of the tranny fluid on I-80 in Sacramento). I pulled the tranny and took it to Dura-Built. The only part that could be reused was the valve body. All other parts were destroyed. The rebuild was $500.

From what has been stated on this board, I thought 727s never broke. Now I understand why they have all of those tranny shops and after market parts houses for Mopars. Just had two 727s rebuilt myself.

Default Thanks Gentlemen

Whether it's the sprag or the clutch it looks like it's going to be a complete redo in either event. Damn, I was hoping it was going to be the filter ha ha. Looks like its time to give the Dart a tune up and shelf the Coronet for the winter. Thanks again for your help.
