Default 1971 Roadrunner engine options...?

I have a guy on another board telling me his Dad bought a brand new 1971 340 Roadrunner.
Were these made?
I always thought 1971 Roadrunners were 383 cars, so I looked in all my books, my "little red book", my "Encyclopedia of American Cars"book, my "Chrysler Chronicle" book, they all say the same thing- no 340 Roadrunners.
What's the truth?

The standard enigine was the 383 2bbl and 3 spd tranny. All other engines were options or part of packages. The 340 was an engine option for the '71 RoadRunner. It's brother the '71 Charger had the option too. I know, cuase i have two of them with 340's in them.

Thanks guys.

I had a buddy with a 1971 "340 Roadrunner" too- I didn't even think about until I looked in my books and saw that they supposedly didn't exist.... goes to show, can't always believe what you read!

Are you sure you don't mean 383 4bbl. I have never heard of or seen a '71 Roadrunner with a 2bbl anything(that was original). I know that the 383 4bbl (AKA: roadrunner engine/super commando) was the base engine. The optional engines were the 340 4bbl, 440 4bbl, 440+6 and the Godlike 426 Hemi.

Actually the 440 4 bbl was stock on the GTX and not supposed to be an option on the roadrunner, but alot of them found there way in there through special orders and warranty work.

The Roadrunner's had the same engine choices as the Super Bee:

Stock: 383 - 4Bbl
Options: 340 - 4Bbl, 440 - 6Bbl, and the 426 Hemi

The 340 Roadrunner was a potent package, it could keep up with the 383 cars and even take them in certain situations.

As well the 383 could often do the same against the 440.
