Brakes?
We're all trying to go faster which is great, but I also want to stop faster. I want to upgrade the brakes on my 70 440 Cuda. I already swapped in a set of front disc brakes from a 74 Cuda but I used the stock pads. I want to go to much better pads and shoes with out having to change over to an after market system. Any suggestions? Any company's web site I can look at? Thanks for the help

Sorry, cant help you with the stock stuff, but I offer a front and rear kit 480 for the front and 460 on the rear disc kit. These kits will help get you stopped in time.

Any ceramic pad should give you what you're looking for.
Ceramic pads, perform better, last longer, and don't leave black dust on wheels. Before I get flamed by the board..... no I don't have any hard stats to back up that last statement. That's what all the brake manufactureres are saying. |

what the heck is flamed?

Flamed, is argued with, lipped off, slagged, dissed, whatever...
Example flame reply to my last post... "...Here's a link www.smarterthandave571.com where there are stat's that show conventional pads have greater stopping effeciency. What are you talking about dave571?" OR "Why the hell did you make a statement like that if you can't back it up" OR "If you don't have stat's you're just BS ing" OR "Maybe that's what they say in Canada, but here we know metalic pads are better, and there are stats at www.howcanyounotknowthis.com" |

The real question is, does anyone make a ceramic (or even a carbon fiver) pad for an early MOPAR?

you can upgrade to the 11.75in rotors real easy with what you have. if you already have the calipers for the 74 cuda then all you need is the caliper mounting bracket from a 76 or so C body and then make a stop to your local parts store for the rotors.. here is the link with directions.

I agree that the 11.75's are a good idea, I have them on my charger, but the BIG problem is locating the larger brackets to hold the calipers (caliper adapters).
around here the yards are picked clean, but I remember getting them off a 78 fury 4 door. took a couple of months of looking, if you email ehrenberg at mopar (muscle? action?) he knows exactly which cars they came on. if you download the previous article mentioned on this thread, there is a measurement to make it easier for junkyard spotting. there is a company making the Hp pads, I saw it in the new parts section of one of the mopar mags, but cannot find which one. but they are out there, so keep looking. |

I was able to get ceramics for my 77 van. I don't know if they are available for the cars or not.

I got my ceramics at Napa.
Things seem to have calmed down around here in the last week or so. I'm scared to ask where Mr. Fiberglass is |

I was thinking of starting a thread, in "off topic", called "Ding dong ...the wicked witch is dead" but thought better of it.

Thanks everyone. GRNFSH, I checked out the site you listed and it's just what I was looking for. Your right, I have everything but the caliper brackets and rotors. Right now I have the small rotors since the car had 14" wheels but now I have 15" so it'll work out great. I found the pads and shoes I want at FirmFeel. Carbon Metalic for both front and rear. Not cheap, but should be much better that the stock one's. By the way GRNFSH, the spec's on your Cuda are almost identical to mine. I switched from the 727 to the 833 and the heads are next on the list. Thanks again all.

brakes
Joe,
My 72 Cuda has front discs, and on the disc pins are some hard to find "V" shaped devices called "brake positioners". These positioners are supposed to be changed each time you change pads. As the pads wear, the brake positioner V is squashed to be thinner and thinner. A web site I looked at claimed that the 73-74 disc brakes ar a bit different in that they do not need to use the brake positioners. Since you seem to have had both 70 and 74 E body disc brakes, are you familiar with these brake positioners? I need a set for both front wheels, and can find them nowhere. Tim |

Ya Tim, I know what part your talking about. There are two V shaped spring clips on each caliper. There is a right and a left for each caliper. You sort of hook each positioner on the caliper then slide the pin thru the positioner and thru the pads and screw the pin into the back half of the caliper. Then there is also a bent peice of wire that hooks around the pin goes over the caliper and hooks around the other pin. I'm not sure, but the positioners seem to help spring the caliper off the rotor when you take your foot off the pedal.
When I did the brakes originally, I just went to the local CarQuest parts store and got the hardware kit the front disc brakes on a '74 Barracuda and all the new parts were in there. That was 3 years ago though. but parts stores should still be able to get the hardwear kits. |

Joe Grapes really helped me, but here is more info.
Joe showed me some Disc brake hardware kits on ebay. The kit had the rubber bushings, new pin bolts, new V shaped "positioners", and anti-rattle springs for both sides for $50. I almost bought them. But then I ordered "loaded" brake calipers from Advanced Auto parts. They were $40 per each side. I had assumed that 'loaded' meant that the rebuilt caliper came with the pads. I was pleasantly surprised that 'loaded' came with the pads and ALSO came with the entire hardware kit (rubber bushings, new pin bolts, new V shaped "positioners", and anti-rattle springs). This was a good way to get the needed hardware kit. Hope this helps someone else. Tim Eckert 72 Cuda 360/904 |
