Question V-belt X serpentine pulleys

Which one is the best choice for a performance engine?

March pulleys is a good option?

The engine is a 72- 318...

Thanks.

Actually, the serpintine belts will use more power than the V belts. At a street engine level, the difference is to small to be concerned about.
Being that March makes use of smaller puleys, you'll be up on power.
I have the March pulleys on my Cuda. I havn't thrown a belt yet.

Like Rumble said, serp belts use more hp and it's more than what you think. Plus they wear out quicker since they are run on both sides and can't take the additional heat. And they chirp and never stay tight enough with those auto tensioners.

V belts areth eonly way to go on a performance engine. You can get what you need in sizes by scrounging the salvage yards or go with the March set up.

One good thing about the V belts over the serps is if the a/c or power steering locks up you can remove that belt and keep going where the serp just burns off and there you are waiting on the two truck

And I have made some God awlful repairs to just keep the water pump working to get to the shop

The March set up makes use of only 1 side unlike factory set ups.
Not worth the price unless your...

1. Pushing a lot of HP and looking for a few more without getting into the engine.
2. Throwing belts like crazy. (Like I was.)
3. WOW! Factor wanted.

The March conversions have multiple serpentine belts, so you're not putting all your eggs in one basket. Also, if you have a ladyfriend with you when throw a critical v-belt, did you know that a pair of pantyhose makes a dandy temporary replacement belt? Of course, now they have those temporary repair belts that you can shorten as needed, then join the ends together with a master link. You don't have to loosen any brackets or remove one belt to get to another, and they'll get you quite a ways to the next service station.

The tension idler still runs on the back side of the does it?

and if your V groove pulleys are alined to 1/8 and deep groved belt trashing should not be a problem on a street/strip engine

Not used on my '73 Cuda. Just the pulleys with the belt. No A/C Car never came with a tensioner. Just V belts.

The March set just uses a tension rod that pushes the alt or power steering away from the center of the block. So a tesioner it not used.

i designed a true serpentine kit for a big block. if anyone can tell me how to post pics i can show you. mine uses factory ratio pulleys and can also be used with a march underdrive pulley kit. i really like the auto tensioner idea but thats just me and i haven't lost a belt yet. when your talking more hp i don;t really understand why you say that? the parasitic loss of hp from accessory drag comes from the components themselves unless your talking about friction in which case i can't see that being more than 1/4 hp difference at most. with my setup i'm now running a reverse rotation water pump, sanden a.c compressor, aluminum power steering pump, 120 amp alternator (mini style) and a self tensioner.

Neat conversion - it looks a lot cleaner than the March kit, since it only uses one belt. I don't mind the tensioner either, as long as you don't have wear problems using it. Are you selling a conversion kit, or was this something you put together just for yourself?

My motor is trowing belt when it passes the 6000RPM range, and it makes me crazy, every time it happens....

I think the problem is in the crank pulley... The bad thing about the March pulleys is that they are really pricey, specially here...but I`ll have to buy a set of V belts in the future...

Thanks for the help....

That was my problem (throwing belts) and 1 off the reasons I went to the March pulleys. Looks was the other. Very different. Pricey, yes. Have not thrown a belt yet.
The system does not use a tensioner. You can use there brackets or your own. They adjust the same old way.
They offer alternate position set up that may use a tensioner. This I'm not sure about.
