Hello everybody!!! This summer I had built a mild 440/727 combo to install in my 69 Dart GT. the combo: 9.5 comp. ported 915 heads .509 cam, M1 single plane intake, MP ignition, and a few other goodies to help not fall apart at 6500 rpm. The trans is a srteet/strip rebuild with a 3500 stall. 8 3/4 with 3.91 / 26x9 MT's. The car has full interior and a 4 pt. cage. Runnig low 12's high 11's. so far. Wanting to go faster i began building a second motor that I hope will get the car in the low 11's. The bulid so far is: 69 block .060 over, fully ported 906's with 2.14/1.81 valves, JE 10.5 slugs, I will gasket mactch my M1 intake when I swap motors. I dont plan on swaping gears unless i switch to a 28 inch tire. I need to know what cam will get me to where i want to go. the car will see both street and srtip duty. Driven on street for weekend cruising or street grudge. I dont want a cam that wont idle below 2000 rpm!!! rough idle is fine though, that MP 509 cam makes that motor sound great a idle!!! Any ideas, or sugestions will be appreciated,

thanx petethekiller

Do you want a hydraulic, or mechanical cam, or a roller? If you will continue with a hydraulic, I suggest comp cams 320/.540" grind. If mechanical is your choice, go with the MP 296/.557" cam, I was very pleased with it. If a roller is your choice; comp cams 308R with .575" lift is very civilized. In the sizes, only the sky is the limit. Any cam will idle at under 2000 rpm if the engine is tuned properly, for example our '451' with a .736" lift cam idled at 700 rpm all day long. A good carb and ignition is the key here.

Are you going to notch the bore for the bigger intake to breath?

I did a quick check with Engpro, Pete. I would stay below 256° duration at .050" for 10.5:1 compression in your 440. I think you can find many cams with less duration that will get you where you want to go

thanks for all the suggestions. I didnt know about notchong the bore, is it nesessary? What about the Hughes Cam? Does anyone have any exspirience with these? As for the choice of a roller cam, solid, or a hydrolic, there is no preference.... The performance and reiliability are the major factors here. I plane on ordering a set of roller rockers this week also.

You don't need to notch the bore for that valve and bore size combination.

Go to hughes web page at hughesengines.com and see their choice, they give a very detailed description of what combonation goes with each cam, I have the he2330bl cam, haven't put it in yet but they personally reccomended it with my combo. Or you can call of compcams i think it is, and get one of their advice lines where they can either reccomend a good choice or custom build you one to fit your exact needs, spendy but well worth it.

I am not a great believer of the magic 'mopar only' cams. I have never used Hughes cams though, have once asked for a suggestion and it was sooo mild that I thought they didn't quite understand what I was looking for.

I would take a look at Ultradyne`s mechanical cams before you buy. There is a lot of 10-11 second mopars running their cams both small & big block.

Definitely look at Hughes and Ultradyne. Their cams are newer designs then Ma Mopar has, and take full advantage of the larger tappets our motors have versus brand x. Ultradyne's stuff tends to be more full tilt race, while Hughes has more streetable cams. I went with a Hughes 3038 grind/springs and pushrods in my SB, and will likely go back for my 440 build. It may just be marketing hype, but Hughes and Ultradyne are Mopar folks so they get my vote
