Default the magnum/LA hybred

ok im near the point of done putting it together...went and got the magnum heads mildly ported ,runners all cleaned up chambers fixed nice and shinny like....so im now puttin' the intake manifold on....and guess what..the original bolts for the LA intake i have dont fit....i mean they arent even close to screwing into the holes in the magnum heads.

looks like the originals are like 3/8 thick and the new heads have holes threaded for 5/16 size bolts.

anyone else find this out? or is it just my luck to get 2 odd ball heads with different size intake bolt holes?

and if its normal;then why aint it listed in the parts needed for the swap that everyone passes around everytime the topic comes up?

for the record they are all 5/16; not just a couple of em and the originals were 3/8 thick and they in no way will fit with out having the heads redrilled and tapped for bigger ones.

so im off to the hardware store to find something that will work...

Im doing the samr thing right now. Waiting on the valve springs to come in. Yes, the magnum intake bolts are smaller than the LA ones.

Default new intake

The bolt holes are at a different angle too. most parts list usually include a new MAGNUM style intake. Mopar performance sells a single or a dual plane. The two are identical to those on the crate mortors.

if you just bought a new manifold you can 1: drill and tap the heads or 2:modify your intake.

i did this swap 5 years ago when no lists were even thought of yet so you should feel lucky. The only reason i swaped to magnum heads was to fit the MP magnum MPI manifold rather than the other way around.

And of course you knew the Magnum rockers oil through the lifter/pushrod assy., unlike the LA engine which oiled through the rocker shaft; right? Dodger1

yea all that other stuff was covered in the swap guides all over the net.only part that wasnt was the different bolt for the new intake.

kinda made that fastener kit for the motor pointless as ive still got to go chasing bolts anyhow.

DAVE; thats a pretty sweet set up,eventually ima try a fuel injected mod someday, just havent had the nerve to mess with all the laptop tuning thats usually needed.

Default gaskets

i bought the felpro gasket kit for entire engine tear down...LA style, wasnt aware that a kit like you mention was availible for the swap...woulda made it easier had i known......

but seeing as how this motor isnt just one year of parts anymore,it does make going to the part house really fun,
ive got heads from basically a new magnum 318/360...ive got a 95 dakota v6 starter, ive got lifters from an '80 AMC a water pump from a 83 diplomat, alternator from a 85 diplomat, valve covers from a 96 dakota,68 or 69 barracuda 360 block and oil pan....makes it a challenge working with the parts counter staff, they look at me weird when i have em pull up so many different vehicles then get all the parts and tell em its all going on the same motor.

the one i really loved was i asked for a starter for a 96 dakota with a 318...got a price for 138 bucks....told em never mind....give me one for a 95 dakota with a v6...75 bucks....same damn part.

advance auto parts loves me
