Serial numbers 1968 Barracuda
I have come across a 1968 Barracuda, and the serial number seems weird to me.
BH29B8BA12247. Why is the EIGHTH digit a LETTER? It's NOT a "4". Shouldn't the last 6 digits of the serial number be numbers? Has anybody seen this before? |

Are the numbers your using off the car or the paper work Im assuming they are off the car. 6 cyl bilt in Hamtramck MI.No I've never seen any thing like that befor. Yes the last 6 didgets should be numbers, the actual body number.
Maybe you have a 1 of 1 6 cyl Barracuda (lol) Ray |

The 8th digit is defintely an "A", but puhleeeeeeeeeease don't tell me it's a superstock car!
LOL! I was thinking it's a typo in the serial number, but the rad support and fender tag are the same. Weird? Could it be a typo in the system where the tags and rad support are stamped wrong? Or, am I blind or stupid? |

Your sure its a "P" that would make it a 340 car in wich case you would have to get to the bottom of the "A"thing! If it was the /6 car like we thought and the papers matched I would have said to bild it an beat it!

Do you think the Lynch Road plant would have anything to do with it? A = Lynch road?
The only thing I can think of apart from that is it's a factory "typo," they did make them on quite a few occaisions. Maybe it should read BC, Before Christ and the serial number really was 5 digits long. LOL!! |

They built almost 3300 6 Cyl Barracudas in 1968. There were a lot of 6 Cyl Barracudas over the years and Challengers as well. Not all of them were V/8's.

It's a Canadian car.
It's a 340 automatic car, the engine code is 52, the fifth digit is "P", but the sixth to last digit IS a letter, and the letter is "A". |

If this is the actual VIN tag, then it is curious. You stated that it is on the fender tag. That's a different story. 1968 was the last year that the fender tag did not contain the complete VIN. Instead, it is the first part of the VIN and then the VON (Vehicle Order Number).
BH29P8BA12247 B - Barracuda H - High Price Class 29 - 2 door sports hardtop P - 340 8 - 1968 B - Hamtramck, MI A12247 - Vehicle Order Number At least that is what I recall about the '68s. |
