Default Old Edelbrock intake - will it fit?

I've spotted a guy in our club has an edelbrock perfrmer intake for cheap. he's been told it only fits a 273 ('65 and '66) because the bolt holes are at a different angle or something, but another guy reckons it fits all small blocks but just doesn't have as good runner design as the current Performer intake.

My application is a '86 Fifth Avenue 318, doesn't need to pass emissions here so no-EGR etc. is OK. Just looking at the cheapest way of getting a 4 barrel onto my 2 barrel car.

The Manifold is marked "Edelbrock D4B"

Will it fit?

Buy it. It is a much better intake than the performer because it is a bit taller and the runner volume is larger. The Performer is a n aluminum casting of an almost stock intake, weenie runners for velocity and low end torque, not much better than cast iron except it is lighter. The D4B (later DP4B) has much better runner design. If the bolts dont line up, lean them over with a dremel or a 1/2 drill bit. the holes are in the same location, the angle is a bit more vertical. I used a Performer on my early 273 and it fit fine with the bolt holes "massaged".

DP4B is for B motor, sorry 'bout that. Im thinking of the LD340 for the 318, forgot the number...LD4B?

273's and some early LA 318s used a different angle on the intake face of the head, making interchangeability a problem. Trust me I have tried. I was not aware of edelbrock making an intake for these heads though. Do you have a part number? If it is an LD4B it will fit the newer heads.

Not sure, but;
The earlier 273 used smaller 5/16 bolts and a different angle between the head to intake. If this is such the intake, ask him if you can trial fit it. Can't hurt right?
If you need a used performer, what would be shipping from the states? In example, New York.
Even if the performer has an EGR, you can allways block it off. Not for nothing, a little inert (sp) gas dosen't hurt.

From the Edelbrock website, I find the following Q&A

Quote:
Jim Cargill recruit@sierra.net Tue Feb 10 17:35:13 PST 1998
Hey guys--I posted this question about a month ago, but probably missed your response. I am building a 360 Mopar for street and occasional strip use. I'm following most of the guidelines on your excellent 340 buildup sheet. I have an older Edelbro ck manifold #D4B, and am wondering about the characteristics. What rpm range/how does it compare to today's Performer manifold, etc. This is a non-smog motor. Any advice you give will be appreceiated!
Thanks, Jim

Jim Cargill, The Edelbrock D4B was designed for early 273 only. It has an RPM range from 1000-6000 on the 273. If used on a 360 it will drop the RPM range too probably idle-5000 RPM at best. It is no where near the manifold that the RPM is. We would highly suggest the use of the RPM intake with the RPM package. Thanks- Scott Fort
From Truckworld, I find that someone has this intake on a '73 340.

Yooo, Big-E. Nice find on the question posed to Edelbrock!
I can see the intake working OK on the truck for the low RPM it is probably turning.
Nice trucks!

Mmmmmm.... The RPM range isn;t a problem as I will retain the stock cam. But if it needs to be milled to fit then its too much hassle. Anyone know for sure on this?

I was thinking of importing a new intake from Summit as I couldn't find one on eBay. The dollar is quite low now which makes importing a good deal and an intake isn't so heavy to make shipping a problem.

The Weiand action plus would be a good choice for the money and a stock thermoquad too.

It will fit. They didnt change the angle of the cylinder head intake port face (that would be a huge production line change for something like that) , only the angle of the mounting bolts. No milling required, I have done this too and I know a 318/360 performer fits on a '65 273 4V with the weird heads with a little work on the outside of the mounting holes. No sealing problems.

Thanks for clearing that one up Pishta, or as we say here "cheers chap"

I have heard the TQ is a good choice, but I don't have one and they aren't so handy in wrecking yards here. Yards are full of F*rd Escorts and imports... Mind you, thats the best place for them!
