Notch on rocker shaft?

I'm just putting my heads back together and noticed that both rocker shafts have square notches at one end.

Are these notches supposed to go towards the front or the rear of the engine?

Stephen,

on your 360 the notch on the end of the rocker shaft goes down and to the front on the left head, and down and to the rear on the right head.

That's weird, I would've thought that, at least, they would been symmetrical on both sides. I didn't take any measurements yet, but do you know off-hand if they're different?

they are the same, look at it this way, if you took the left head and put it on the right side, the notch would still be in the same place.
