o/d 4 spd for 440?
i'm looking for a 4 spd a-833 o/d tranny that will bolt up to a 440. Do these exist? if so, what vehicle can I get one out of? I'm building a 440 powered '28 Hupmobile and I really don't want an automatic. thanks,

the 833 overdrives were never strong.... not something you want to put behind a 440.

Why do you need OD? Just put enough gear at the back to keep your cruising comfy,..after all, you're not thinking of going 100mph in a Hupmobile, are you?
I have 25.2 inch tall tires (245/60-14) and 3:23 rear gears in my 833, 2500rpm at 60 mph..nice n easy. Just pretend it's a 3 speed for the 1/4 mile..102 MPH through the traps at 6000 rpm... in third... |

thanks for the replies. I didn't know that the o/d's were weak tranny's. I didn't really put much thought to the tranny choice, I just know that I wish I had o/d in my 66 charger. every were I go from here is highway and I like to be able to cruise at 80 without worries. For a non-o/d A-833 do I really need a "hemi" 4spd? These are pretty pricey and I'm trying to do this build-up for nothing but I don't want to do it wrong. thanks again.

I know the aluminum case OD's used in A-bodies and F bodies had some issues but never hear of a problem with the iron case ones. |

I would stick with a normal 833 and then go with 3.23 or 2.94 gears. If you really feel that you need OD, then look into a GV OD unit.

4 speeds
You really have to work at it to hurt a iron case 4 speed, mabeye run it out of oil a few times and too many reverse drops, the only thing I have ever had to replace are the brass shifting forks, put in some steel ones and then keep bangin gears.

a used o/d unit has a lot more wear than a 1:1 833. in a regular 4 spd, 4th gear, the one used most, is straight through, 1:1. the countershaft in the tranny isn't needed to reduce the gearing. this saves the bearings. in an o/d unit, the linkage is reversed in 3rd and 4th. 3rd gear becomes a number less than 1:1, and takes 4th gr's position on the shifter, and 1:1 is now considered "3rd" gear.
basically, if your gonna rebuild the entire tranny, you shouldn't have any problems with the o/d unless you pound on it, but, why would you want a manual tranny than? sox and martin used to use trannies from different makes because the dodge trannies were so strong they were breaking all the other parts on their race vehicles. i wouldn't mind that kind of security in my driver, all i have ever wrecked are 7 dodge automatic trannies. no diffs, one small block, thats it. |

The Hemi and most 440's were 1-3/16" X 18 and the rest were 1" X 23.

I have one that came from an 83(?) slant pickup. Long tailshaft.
BTW: Feets used to run one in his twin turbo 440! |
