stroker buildup
Hello, all. I'm new to the forum. Just looking for some advice. I am planning on building the 451 sroker. I have a '74 400 that I will be using with 452 casting heads. The whole build will be based around the cam that I have for it. It is a Comp Cams Magnum with a 292 duration, .525 in. of lift, and I believe a centerline of 110. Solid lifters. I was planning on having the main saddles bored out to accept the crank. I believe this is the only custom machining required, right? I will be using 440 rods, also. Anyway, I am just looking for suggestions. I want to keep the build under $2500, so I won't be using ALL hi po parts, but I want 425 hp and 450 to 475 ft. lbs. of torque. Any shared experience on this subject will be appreciated.

fastamatt,
Some advice, I bought all the pieces to build a 400/451 but pistons, couldn't decide on compression ratio. Well I took some good advice and had the block UT'ed. had 7 good cylinders and one with a core shift that was .275 on one side and .130 on the other side. If you interested in a forged 440 crank cut to fit a 400 mians, and had the throws cut down to 7.25 to fit in a 400 block email me. wheels2@graceba.net I going with a 451 from a 440 block with avg wall thickness of .245. Listen to some of the people and they will say you some money and pain. fastamatt,.
My 451 has mildly ported Edelbrock aluminum heads, Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold, BG 850 CFM carb, 440 crank with mains cut to 383/400 size, 440 rods on JE pistons, Hughes solid lifter cam, 11.2:1 compression ratio. It made 550 hp and 600 ft/lbs of torque on the dyno. In retrospect, the 11.2:1 was too much compression and I would have been better off at 10.5:1. But it runs like a scalded cat and revs like there is no tomorrow. Pulls like a freight train from 2500 to 6000. With your iron heads, keep your compression to no more than 9.5:1. Might have a little too much cam at that compression and you might want to think about something a step down at 282 duration. The engine should easily make your target of 425 horsepower. You will be happy with your choice, I think. It's a sweet combination. |

Re 383/431
I bought all the pieces to build a 400/451, and 383/431 same basic idea. Your forged 440 crank cut to fit a 400 mians, and had the throws cut down to 7.25 to fit in a 400 block, and balanced to you piston & rod combination . Either rod will work(383/400 or 413/440) , I like longer rods. Its customs pistons either way, but with long rods you get shorter, lighter pistons.
