Default got engine disassebled

Today I got the engine completely taken apart. Its has engine degresser sprayed all over it and were going to take it to the car wash and spray it down. Some engine problems we found were-bearings had some wear with some little holes, crank needs to be ground or polished, the #8 bore has a big scratch about .5-.10 thousanths deep.
Do you think this is a problem on when it was running it was running crap?-timing chain was almost destroyed. That plastic crap that covers the little gears fell off. And the chain was so loose you could almost take it off withouttaking it off of the crank.lol.
We tested one of the heads that was on it when it was running. It had 1 intake and 1 exhuast leak.
Were going to have it bored .20 over. Are those crane cams energizer good for my engine(.454/.454 lift)?
Thanks

The cranks not a problem, just have it polished. The crane is o.k. but a dual pattern cam would be much better for what you have as well as milling .035 off your heads too.

Yup, Gotta get that low compression up, to run a decent cam and enjoy the results. CC your cylinders and head chambers, throw the numbers into a compression formula and see where your at, then decide where you want to be or let your cam decide for you. and mill accordingly. Within reason of course Get a good valve job also. Good luck

On monday I sent my block and crank to be refinished. The blokc will be bored .30 and the crank -.10 polished. What cam should I get since the dual patern would be better? And what pistons would be good? thanks

A good set of flat top Kb's will work great and will be within your budget. I would use a 272 276 duration cam for starters. YOu dont have a low gear or a lot of other parts, so this cam will work good for you.

I wouldn't personally let the rear gears determine how I build my motor unless the tall gears you have now are what you want. If you plan to go to a steeper gear (3.91, 4.10) later on, then plan for that now when you purchase a cam, and build the engine.

Summit Racing will have the Keith Black pistons that will fit your budget. About $216 for a set last time I bought them. CAnt beat that price anywhere. I'd just go with a Comp Cams. IT will be o.k. for your first engine.

Too bad you didn't have the budget. Other wise I would say tear that beast apart as you are doing the whole engine and put a 4" stroke crank in that beast. Even if it was a cast unit it wouldn't be horrible, turn those small cubes into something slightly bigger.

Damn 2 minute edit rule.

Even if it was a cast unit it wouldn't be horrible, turn those small cubes into something slightly bigger as you are not going to be spraying on it so you could go with forged rods, cast crank, and some kb pistons , as I do beleive they make them for this application, and be ok. That cam is alittle small to be honest, but if you are looking for a general overall smooth ride than do that. I would personnaly go with something a tad bit bigger. maybe an isky hydraulic in the range of 465-475 lift.

I've had good luck with the Comp Cams Xtreme Energy series. Good street cams IMHO. The big scratch in the cylinder bore was probably from the piston skirts scrubbing the cylinder wall if the engine ever got hot...

My budget is very tight. Im only lookin at 1000 worth of parts. Im saving my money for awile until I get enough to get a 360 stroker or a big block.
