 Holley 650 on a slant 6

Check this out, my son found me a cherry deal on a 85 Dodge Ram so I checked out. Guy wants 300.00 dollars I was sold when I saw the body, awesome shape. Popped the hood and almost shat myself, 650 Holley with headers, duels all the back and flowmasters!! Uh yeah I took it in not running condition. Now the questions!!!! 1) How do I check the power valve in a 1850 Holley (carb off vehicle), this guy had complaints of bad timing. 2) What is acceptable in up and down play in the distibutor. 3) This ignition system has no ECU and no vacum advance and no balist resistor???? 4) Last question for now is what is a starting float level for this carb, and what is the starting point on the idle screws? All advice and comments welcome! Thanks in advance!!!

1. Replace the power valve. It is 3 bucks and you can get the one you need. I test them the old fashion way for a bad diaphragm. I, for better terms, apply suction and use my tongue as a stopper and see if it holds the plunger, followed by a healthy swig of beer (and you thought mechanics drank while working for the social aspect?)
2. You want the distributor to seat into the receiver of the pump shaft, but not ride on it. use the shims and get it so it doesnt rock when you install it. (sorry, on a LA it is like that!)
3. Might have an old school set up that doesnt have a ballast resistor, you can run without them, but dont expect your points to last too long. Mechanical Breaker point distributor + 12V + coil = spark!
4. Easy way to ball park a 1850 for float height it to invert the bowl and adjust the float height so a pencil will just fit under the float
5. A turn and a half from light seat will give you a good starting point on the mixture screws.

I doubt that's a 650 on a slant. If it is, get rid of it cause you'll never get it to run right. Get you a 430 cfm holley that they use for tunnel rams. Most likely that is what's on it. For a float check once you get it running just pull the site plug on the right side of the float bowl and adjust til fuel just trickles from it. '85 '85 was a truck transition year. Check to see if you have a computer behind the battery. It controls the dist. The dist should not have any play in them on a slant.

Default carb.

I believe the list # he quoted, i.e. the 1850 is indicative of the 650 holly, and I agree with dwc, need a slightly smaller carb. 500 cfm or thereabouts

Yeah, I see the number now. Sorry about that. I'd get rid of that and get the 430 or 500 realy quick.

That's what I've always heard: put the 500 Edelbrock on with the 4bbl Hyper-pak manifold, and you're good to go.

Thanks for the replies everybody! I actully got this beast to run yesterday with that monster carb. However the first three cylinders were way rich! The header pipe was cherry red all the way back the the collector!!!! Not to mention the idle was out of this world fast, man is it loud, my neighbors will love to hear that baby kick at 5 am. Yikes. I noticeed on the carb it was only spraying one side so I tore it down, come to find it was gummed up, the whole carb was due for new gaskets/overhaul. Other than the gaskets it looked great, never rebuilt before. Jet size was a meager 66 in front. I talked to the dude I bought the truck from and he said Cliffords recomended that carb What would be a good square bore carb for performance, the guy put in an aftermarket cam but didn't have the specs. final question is which is the best way to mount a four barrel square bore carb on a /6 intake? Would pointing the carb at the engine help with the rich condition instead of having it straight forward?

I'd put the 430 holley on it. It's plenty big for that /. I would try pointing it towards the engine with the prim side if you can. Might have to put some dams on the plenum floor in front of the two middle cylinders.

I think even the 430 might be a little large. I am not realy dead set on a Holley they are good but I feel Eddies are better driver carbs. I did the math on the Holley web sight and for perfect VE it came out to be about 390 CFM. But like I said I don't know what size the cam is. This guy really spared no expense on this truck, so there is no telling! Hey DWC can you tell me weather or not a 77 225 cylinder head will work on this 85? I have an extra /6 in the shed machined out and ready to assemble, but the lazy man would just swap the head!!

All the heads will swap. THey can be milled up tp .090 too. Did not know edel had one that small. Most of them are junk these days.
