Default Mini Starter

Who has used one of these to replace the big one? Do you have to change out the tranny inspection plate/dust shield as well? I can see that the nose of the small starter is a bit smaller than the bigger one, does the gap around it in the plate/shield matter that much?

Small block or big block? I put one on my 440 and had to do a little modification of the main terminal and grind a little off of the block to make sure there was clearance for the wire and connector. Other than that is was a bolt in deal.

It made a HUGE difference in starting ability and no hot start problems any more!

put one for a '96 pickup on my '84 that has been retrofitted with a 440. cost me $85 for the starter and $40 for the core charge. had to use a hacksaw to cut 1/4" off the battery terminal (on the starter), but the rest was a straight-forward bolt in... and i wont have to remove the header to replace it .

doesnt sound like a dodge when it starts, but it turns the engine almost 50% faster than the big starters do, and it weighs less than 1/2 as much. now... if youre a glutton for punishment, you can buy a new starter that is also a "straight bolt-in" for like $400 from some speed shops, but you will probably still have to cut the battery terminal bolt off.

this starter happens to be the ONLY part autozone has for my truck here... they even have to order the sparkplugs

Mini starters are $18 "out the gate' at the junkyards here, but you do pull them yourself. I have seen them on eBay for decent prices as well, but not as decent as my favorite junkyard.

Re:that Dakota starter. Do you know if it would clear the #3 header tube (Hedmans) that wraps up and over and down past the side of the old-style starter on a 360 (and just happens to contact mine)? I know they are a lot shorter and have lots of clearance that way.

Thy are smaller in all respects. As for the terminal, mine had a kit that moved the terminal away from the block (400) Maybe it was for a Mitsu V6 or something. It really kicks my 451 over, with no drag. Best upgrade Mopar ever did. 69 bucks at the swap meet (reconditioned and upgraded to 2.4Kw)

put mine on this morning, end of the project which included a low gear set tranny, 2 freeze plugs, and driver's side engine mount.
I do like the way it starts....

I have one on a 318 with hooker headers. Its a 74 satellite and have to remove the center link to get the starter in and out thats all. Dosen't touch any of the tubes.

Pulled a mini-starter on an 88 Dakota at the JY just to look, and the tranny inspection plate hole is the same as for big starters.
So it doesn't matter after all.....

Go to www.ebaymotors.com and search for MOPAR starter. Someone has an auction for 20 of them. Current high bid is $55 each (that's the price you pay per unit for the total number that you want).

Default mini starter

just bought one for my 440, but notice the top bolt hole is way to big, it looks has if it would go in a dow pin. Is there such starters that use only one bolt. I must have the wrong mini starter. Someone told me that all mopar mini starters were all the same.

the ones I have removed all have a stud for the bottom and a bolt for the top, no dowel pin. There has to be at least 2 hard mounts and a dowel pin will not do.

the bottom bolt is for a 3/8 bolt or stud (i think thats the size). however, the top hole uses a bigger bolt... i think that it is a 7/16. the holes are NOT the same size. michaela is right, one of the fasteners is a stud, one is a bolt. i just cant remember which is which. in addition, the top hole may be oversized for a 7/16 bolt/stud to make alignment easier.

as long as you do NOT get the racing version (that one has no nose or support for the shaft), when the starter is correctly installed it will be lined up correctly. the nose of the starter fits snugly in a corresponding socket in the bell housing. the lower bolt/stud AND the nose engaged in the bell housing is all it takes to properly locate the starter... the top bolt is for extra security.
